Presentation date: ______. Practice and time your Talk home; it should be 3 - 5 minutes.

o  Hook listeners – grab your audience’s attention!

o  Show audience the book and tell title, author, when it was first published.

o  Give a concise summary (60 sec or less) of the plot using literary jargon: protagonist, antagonist, setting, exposition, rising action, climax, and a little of the books ending. Tell just enough to entice fellow students to read it but don’t spoil the ending.

o  Fluently read a selected passage from the 2nd half of the book (1/2 page) and tell why you selected that particular passage. The passage should strongly reflect a literary element, such as characterization, theme, setting, foreshadowing, conflict, imagery, etc.

o  Pick out 2 literary terms NOT used during your plot summary or reading and discuss their use in your book, providing examples (imagery, personification, simile, metaphor, mood, irony, tone, characterization, theme, etc.). List the 2 terms on the rubric before your talk.

o  Share what you liked and/or disliked about the book or how would you rate it and why.

o  Talk about one or more connections you’ve made

§  between the book and your life (events, feelings) OR

§  between the book and other books you’ve read OR

§  between the book and historical events OR

§  between the book’s theme and your life OR

§  some other connection

o  Speak comfortably and enthusiastically (you must practice at home; it will be evident that you have or have not done this).

o  Cliffhanger: end your book talk with something unresolved or some food for thought so your audience will be eager to read the book!

Don’ts * Don’t read your notes. * Don’t speak with a monotone voice

* Don’t lean on the blackboard or slump over the podium.

* Don’t plagarize – don’t say things in your talk that you read online or are otherwise published. *Don’t take longer than 60 seconds to summarize your book

Use the following grading rubric to plan your Talk.
