EXPERIMENT – IONIC OR COVALENT?

For this experiment – your group must design your OWN procedure – BUT it MUST be approved by Mrs. Phillips before you can begin your experiment. SAFETY AND DATA TABLES MUST BE COMPLETE BEFORE YOU MAY BEGIN. Your group’s goal is to test the properties of your assigned compounds (both known and unknown compounds) and determine whether each compound is an ionic or covalent compound based on your group’s data. Here is a list of the materials that will be available to you, as well as your known and unknown compounds.

ASSIGNED COMPOUNDS: DAY ONE – KNOWNS: Salt (NaCl) DAY TWO – UNKNOWNS: 1. ______

Wax (C15H31) 2. ______

Sand (SiO2) 3. ______

AVAILABLE MATERIALS: Aluminum foil (for boats) Hot Plates Conductivity Tester Distilled Water Testing Cups Wooden Stirrers Scoops (spoons) Rinse Beaker Timer (use your phone) Scales

Objective: To test the properties of compounds of both known and unknown identities and determine whether each is an ionic compound or covalent compound, based on your results and analysis. The properties you will be testing are: relative melting point, relative solubility, relative conductivity, and physical appearance. USE YOUR NOTES and PROPERTY TABLES to analyze the results and make your final determination.

Group Roles: For each compound, there will be: One group member acting as the “Lead Scientist” – This person will be responsible for directing and carrying out the procedure of the experiment and will call on the “Lab Assistant” for aid as needed. One group member will act as the “Data Collector” – This person will write down any observations, measurements, etc. during the trial. THIS WILL BE SHARED WITH GROUP MEMBERS LATER. One group member will act as the “Lab Assistant” – This person will be responsible for gathering and disposing of materials (responsible for clean-up!!!) as designated by the lead scientist, and will assist the lead scientist in performing the procedure. These roles will rotate for each compound, meaning each member MUST be the Lead Scientist, Data Collector, and Lab Assistant at least ONCE. If you do not have a third group member, the Data Collector will take on the role of Lab Assistant as well.

YOU MUST CREATE A DATA TABLE SHOWING THE DATA YOU PLAN TO COLLECT BEFORE YOU CAN BEGIN. Role: Salt / Unknown 1 Wax / Unknown 2 Sand / Unknown 3 Lead Scientist Data Collector Materials Manager
