STUDENT FAMILY HERITAGE PROJECT

STANDARDS:

ELACC6RI3: Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated in a text (e.g., through examples or anecdotes).

ELACC6RI7: Integrate information presented in different media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively) as well as in words to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue.

ELACC6W4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

ELACC6W6: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of three pages in a single sitting.

ELACC6SL2: Interpret information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how it contributes to a topic, text, or issue under study.

ELACC6SL4: Present claims and findings, sequencing ideas logically and using pertinent descriptions, facts, and details to accentuate main ideas or themes; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.

ELACC6SL5: Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, images, music, and sound) and visual displays in presentations to clarify information.

TASKS:

Students will conduct research within his or her family to connect with the past and discover more about the family’s ancestry. Students will analyze, share & present their findings in various formats, including written, oral, and digital presentations.

REQUIRED COMPONENTS:

1.  I Am From Poem [Template Provided]

2.  Family Tree of at least three (3) generations [Links and/or Template Provided]

3.  Interview of a relative [parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.]

4.  An informational text essay about your life & where you come from.

5.  Documents and photographs [Consult with parents when selecting pictures & documents to share. Please use copies of all documents and photographs. Do not use originals.]

6.  Mementos and miscellaneous material [Get permission from parents.]

7.  Presentation of Heritage [Oral & Visual à(3-5 min.)]

STUDENT OPTIONS:

J  Your visual can be a poster, a model you have made, a PowerPoint or I-movie presentation, other digital format, or any other student made art.

J  Use a variety of sources such as the Internet, Destiny, encyclopedias, text books, CD-ROMs, and family members.

J  Family members are invited to come and share the history of your family as part of your presentation.

II.  I Am From Poem

Use the attached template to create your poem. The poem must meet the following criteria:

Ø  Follow the format provided

Ø  Be creative & unique to you & your family

Ø  Include appropriate punctuation & spacing

Ø  Should be typed or neatly written in blue/black pen ink on plain paper

III.  Family Tree

It is like a map of who’s who in your family.

Ø  The information on this page must be completed creatively & neatly. You may use one of the links below or create your own format.

Ø  Three generations are required—you, your parents, and your grandparents.

Ø  Complete dates should be used whenever possible. You can estimate a date if you do not know a date exactly. When you use an estimated date, use the abbreviation c before the date, which stands for circa (about the time of).

Ø  If there is information you cannot locate, leave the space blank (do not use question marks or “I don’t know” in the space.

Ø  If you can complete your chart further than the required three generations, you should certainly do so.

You may use some of the interview questions listed here, or you may come up with your own questions. You must include the questions & responses from the interview. You must use 10 or more questions for the interview.

26.  How is the world today different from what it was like when you were a child?

27.  Who was the oldest relative you remember as a child? What do you remember about them?

29.  Is there a naming tradition in your family, such as always giving the firstborn son the name of his paternal grandfather?

30.  What stories have come down to you about your parents? Grandparents? More distant ancestors?

31.  Are there any stories about famous or infamous relatives in your family?

32.  Have any recipes been passed down to you from family members?

33.  Are there any physical characteristics that run in your family?

34.  Are there any special heirlooms, photos, bibles or other memorabilia that have been passed down in your family?

35.  What was the full name of your spouse? Siblings? Parents?

36.  When and how did you meet your spouse? What did you do on dates?

37.  What was it like when you proposed (or were proposed to)? Where and when did it happen? How did you feel?

40.  How would you describe your spouse? What do (did) you admire most about them?

41.  What do you believe is the key to a successful marriage?

V.  Informative Essay

You will use what you know about your family in general, from research and interview(s) to write your informative essay about your family. The essay should be at least 3-5 paragraphs. You should complete a rough draft & work with a peer for editing & revising.

Your visual presentation should have a variety of pictures & documents to help tell the story of your heritage. Identify the pictures with names and indicate the relationship of those pictured to you. Include the date, location, and the occasion of the picture if possible.

Below are some suggestions of copies of things you might include. You are not limited to these, however. Use your own creativity.
