LANGUAGEAND AREA STUDYPROGRAMS IN AMERICANUNIVERSITIES Compiled by Larry Moses EXTERNALRESEARCH STAFF DEPARTMENT OFSTATE 1964 :t PREFACE rx United States responsibilitiesin world affairs continueto demand specialists trained to deal withforeign areas and cultures.In- creasingly, the specialist, whether engaged ingovernment, busi- ness, or education, has had to demonstratea command of languages and knowledge about civilizationsnot traditionally offered in American universities. The continued developmentof centers capable of offering such training hasnecessitated another edition of this directory, published in 1954, 1956,and 1959 as Area Study Programs in American Universities, and in 1962 under the present title, Language and Area StudyPrograms in American Universities. This edition describes 153programs leading to graduate degrees. 17 more thanwere covered inthe 1962 edition. Forthe first time, names of faculty membersare included in the descriptions.A Language Index has also beenadded. At the undergraduate level, the proliferationof programs has been so marked that it is impossibleto include all of them here; instead a representative sampling isappended that indicates the variety of these programs in fouryear schools. (For a somewhat different sampling of undergraduateprograms see Non-Western Studies in the Liberal Arts College, association of American Colleges.) a forthcoming study by the Language and Area StudyPrograms in AmericanUniversities is compiled and publishedby our External ResearchStaff. It was prepared with the cooperationof the Language DevelopmentBranch of the Office ofEducation, Department of Health,Education, and Welfare. Special acknowledgmentis due the Office of Educationfor its assistance, althoughit is in no way responsiblefor the selection and description of theprograms listed. Program descriptionsare derived from publishedsources and from information suppliedby the directors of languageand area centers. The directory doesnot attempt to evaluate theprograms listed; omission ofa program is not meant to suggest thatit has less merit than thoseincluded. The External ResearchStaff wel- comes corrections and informationabout new programs foruse in preparation of thenext edition. The widelydiffering names given to the programs reflect the differencesof emphasis which the uni- versities place upon them.Where once manyprograms gave virtually no attention to
