MINUTES OF THE 2 OCTOBER 2017 MEETING A motion was heard to approve the minutes as distributed. Fieguth and Courtenay. Carried. There was no business arising from the minutes. 2. DECEMBER MEETING OF SENATE Dixon noted that there is currently insufficient business anticipated for the December meeting of Senate to justify holding the meeting, and that this group will maintain its December meeting to decide whether to cancel the meeting at that time. 3. MEMBERSHIP OF SENATE: AMENDMENTS TO SENATE BYLAWS Grivicic provided a short overview of the proposed amendments, which are of a housekeeping nature arising from changes to position titles and from shifting responsibilities among the direct reports to the provost. It was noted that, in the presentation of the report to Senate, the president and/or provost might like to provide a short primer on the title changes occurring in May 2017 which drives the proposed amendments. Members queried as to whether Diana Parry’s position might become ex-officio in time. A motion was heard to recommend that Senate receive and give first reading to the draft amended bylaws. Skidmore and Casello. Carried. 4. DRAFT 20 NOVEMBER 2017 SENATE AGENDA The committee reviewed the draft agenda and noted that the text pertaining to passing grades on page 27 of the package suggests that instructors can establish what a passing grade is, whereas the intention might be that a different grade may be accepted for progression but the university sets the passing grade. The secretary will bring this to the attention of the associate vice-president, academic, as well as the registrar for potential revision in the final submission to Senate. Grivicic provided an overview of reports added after the initial distribution of the agenda, including (1) report from Faculty of Arts, (2) report from Senate Graduate & Research Council for inclusion in the consent agenda, (3) revised report from Senate Graduate & Research Council for inclusion in the regular agenda which brings no material changes, and (4) report from Vice-President, University Research. By consensus, the noted reports shall be included in the agenda package along with any necessary changes to the agenda cover sheet. A motion was heard to approve the Senate agenda for 20 November 2017, as amended. Fieguth and Fletcher. Carried unanimously. 5. OTHER BUSINESS Skidmore observed that the strategic mandate agreement could be brought to Senate for information once the process is complete, and members agreed that as a public document this would be acceptable. Further details are available at: https://uwaterloo.ca/secretariat/committees-and-councils/senate-graduate- research-council FOR INFORMATION CURRICULAR SUBMISSIONS On behalf of Senate, new courses, course revisions, course inactivations, and minor program revisions were approved for the Faculties of Applied Health Sciences (kinesiology, recreation and l eisure studies, school of public health and health systems), Engineering (school of architecture and departments of chemical, civil and environmental, mechanical and mechatronics, and systems design engineering), Environment (department of geography and environmental management), Math (computer science, s tatistics and actuarial science), as well as Renison U niversity C ollege (English for multilingual speakers). GRADUATE AWARDS On behalf of Senate, council approved the UW Tri-Agency Degree Completion Award (operating), GradTalks Research Dissemination Award (operating), Toyota Canada Automotive Safety Graduate Scholarship (trust) and the Walrus Award in Political Science (endowment). ACADEMIC PROGRAM REVIEW REPORTS a. Final Assessment Report – Pure Math [Attachment #1] TEXT MATCHING SOFTWARE On behalf of Senate, council reviewed recommendations from the Office of Academic Integrity and Centre for Teaching and Learning and approved Turnitin to be activated but not enabled by default in LEARN. Recommendations included: (1) draft text for insertion within the undergraduate calendar; (2) modified course outline boilerplate, Turnitin may be used, remove reference to Patriot Act; and (3) the drop box to be checked by faculty in LEARN when enabling Turnitin. Senate Undergraduate Council reported approval of Turnitin to Senate on 20 November 2017. /kw Jeff Casello Charmaine Dean Associate Vice-President, Graduate Studies and Vice President, University Research Postdoctoral Affairs 3 Senate Graduate and Research Council Attachment #1 (Consent) Final Assessment Report Pure Math (MMath/PhD) June 2017 Summary of the Program Review: In accordance with the University Institutional Quality Assurance Process (IQAP), this final assessment report provides a synthesis of the external evaluation and the internal response and assessments of the programs (BA, MMath PhD) delivered by the Department of Mathematics. A self-study (Volume I) was submitted to the Associate Provost, Graduate Studies1 on June 12, 2015. The self-study presented the program descriptions and learning outcomes, an analytical assessment of this program, and program data including the data collected from a student survey along with the standard data package prepared by the Office of Institutional Analysis & Planning (IAP). Appended were the course outlines for all courses in the program and the CVs (Volume II) for each full-time faculty member in the Department. Two arm’s-length external reviewers (Volume III), (Dr. Karl Dilcher, Professor of Mathematics, Dalhousie University and Dr. James Mingo, Professor of Mathematics, Queen’s University, were ranked and selected by the Associate Provost, Graduate Studies, in addition one internal reviewer (Dr. Larry Swatuk, Associate Professor of Environment). They reviewed the self-study documentation and then conducted a site visit to the University on March 28-29, 2016. The visit included interviews with the Vice-President, Academic & Provost; Associate Provost, Graduate Studies; Dean of the Faculty; Faculty Associate Dean of Graduate Studies; Chair of the Department Faculty members; staff and meetings with a group of current graduate students. This final assessment report is based on information extracted, in many cases verbatim, from the self-study, the external reviewers’ report and the program response.
