Office of the President Papers in this collection originated from the Office of the President during the first administration of Milton Obote and that of Idi Amin. While the earliest folios in this collection were produced before independence, the bulk of this material dates from the early 1960s through 1979. Following independence, the Office of the President inherited much of the work previously handled by the Governor’s Office, with the exception of those administrative duties taken up by newly created ministries. The contents of files from the Office of the President are broad and cover a diverse range of topics pertinent to the governance of independent Uganda. The material includes cabinet minutes, reports on citizenship policy, presidential speeches, and a great deal in between. Confidential files from this period are located in the Confidential Papers, separate from the present collection. The material in this collection did not have an existing uniform cataloguing system. While some files had a CRA/ number or a similar designation, the majority of files contained no number or cataloging information. As a result, the collection has been organized as the files were found in their boxes. While this original order has been maintained, new files numbers have been added to aid in locating files. For example, Box 1 contains files numbered in pencil 1 through 45, while Box 2 contains files numbered in pencil 1 through 36. The only exception to this system is Box 14, which contains files on Animal Husbandries and Fisheries, which have their own six digit cataloging system.
