Lisa Alter is a partner in the firm of Alter, Kendrick & Baron, LLP in New York City. Her practice is focused primarily in the area of copyright law, with a particular emphasis on domestic and international music copyright issues. She advises composers, lyricists, artists, musical estates, and music publishers on a wide variety of transactional and licensing matters, conducts in-depth copyright due diligence in connection with the acquisition, sale and/or administration of copyright catalogues, and consults on issues involving termination of grants, recapture of copyrights, and foreign reversionary rights. Ms. Alter lectures frequently at professional and music industry meetings on copyright matters and has represented clients on legislative matters impacting their copyright interests. She has also testified as an expert witness in matters involving music publishing interests and copyright termination rights. Cynthia S. Arato is an experienced litigator with a practice focusing on intellectual property, media and entertainment, and commercial litigation. Cynthia has successfully represented major corporations and prominent individuals in copyright, trademark, defamation, right of publicity, false advertising, employment, contract, fraud, fiduciary duty, and royalty actions. She has particular expertise prosecuting and defending complex copyright class actions. Cynthia regularly advises clients on a wide range of intellectual property matters, including trademark and right of publicity issues related to advertisements and products. She was lead trial counsel for the Select Committee of Inquiry formed by the House of Representatives in Connecticut in connection with impeachment proceedings related to Governor John G. Rowland, winning a landmark ruling from that State’s highest court leading to the Governor’s resignation from office. Before co-founding Shapiro Arato LLP, Cynthia was a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and at other firms of national reputation, including the boutique litigation firm of Parcher, Hayes & Snyder. Cynthia’s clients include leading entertainment and media companies, major record companies, and artists and writers in the entertainment industry. Ross Bagley is a member of Pryor Cashman LLP's Litigation, Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment and Digital Media Groups where he represents music publishers, record labels, performers and television and film studios. Ross has worked on a variety of complex cases involving intellectual property ownership, terminations of copyrights and copyright infringement. Ross was a member of the Pryor Cashman team that obtained one of the largest jury awards in history for digital copyright infringement against music service provider MP3tunes, Inc. and its owner and CEO, Michael Robertson. Ross was also a member of the Pryor Cashman teams that obtained dismissal of a 2015 right of publicity claim against Beyoncé based on her song “Drunk in Love” and dismissal of a 2016 copyright infringement claim based on the artist’s audiovisual album, Lemonade. The new platform, MixSCAN®, which is already being utilized by the popular DJ streaming website, Thefuture.fm, is expected to roll out industry-wide this year. Over the years, Bob’s passion for applying unique technology solutions to marketplace challenges has led to break-through product development including the creation of national fantasy sports, electronic voice and data trading platforms, advertising and music registries, and content rights management applications. Katie Baron is a partner in the firm Alter, Kendrick & Baron, LLP in New York City. Katie concentrates her practice in the area of music transactions with a special focus on issues related to copyright law. She handles the negotiating, drafting and implementing of a wide range of agreements within the entertainment industry and counsels on matters related to the acquisition, administration and licensing of rights both with respect to traditional media as well as in the ever-evolving digital arena. Her clients include a number of composers, songwriters, musical estates, performing artists and music publishers. Katie has a bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and received her law degree from Fordham University. Robert Bienstock serves as Senior Vice President of Business of Carlin Recorded Music Library Limited. Mr. Bienstock serves as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs and Operations for Carlin America, he began his music business career in the early 70s as an apprentice, recording engineer at Atlantic Records after his Freshman year at Northwestern University. In 1994, he joined Carlin America, Inc., where he manages information systems and technologies, oversees all corporate legal and operational matters as well as the activities of both the Royalty and Licensing departments. This initial employment rapidly led to numerous tenures as a staff engineer most notably including Starday Recording in Nashville and the famed Fantasy Records studios located in the Bay Area where he also resumed his academic pursuits. He then joined The Hudson Bay Music Company in New York as its Professional Manager and was also involved with various recording projects in association with such celebrated producers as Leiber and Stoller and Andrew Loog Oldham. A growing fascination with law then returned Mr. Bienstock to college life and studies at the Fordham University School of Law where he frequently contributed articles on copyright issues to the Law School newspaper, was founder and officer of the Fordham Entertainment and Sports Law Council and won a Burkan Competition prize for his essay on copyright law. After placing on the Dean's List for two consecutive years and being named to the Fordham Law Review. Soon after he joined the New York offices of the renowned Los Angeles law firm of O'Melveny & Myers and, while consulting in copyright and intellectual property law, specialized in real estate transactions that included secured and convertible loans, property acquisitions and leveraged buy-outs, real estate securitizations, limited partnership syndications and leasing. He earned his Law J.D. in 1985 graduating in the top 10 percent of his class. He Graduated from the University of San Francisco in 1976 with a Bachelor degree in Communication Arts and Dean's List honors. Andrew Bergman is the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel for Downtown Music Publishing, a global music rights management business with offices in New York, Amsterdam, London, Los Angeles and Nashville. In his capacity at Downtown, Mr. Bergman is involved in all facets of the Company’s management, strategic planning and business development. Mr. Bergman also oversees the day-to-day operations as well as the business development and business affairs of the company. Mr. Bergman began his career as the Director of Business Affairs for Island Records, where he worked with numerous developing and established recording artists. In 1998, Andrew joined Davis Shapiro Lewit & Hayes where he represented a variety of gold, platinum and mulit-platinum recording artists and producers with respect to their activities in the entertainment industry, eventually becoming Partner. Prior to joining Downtown, Mr. Bergman was a partner at Roberts & Ritholz LLP. His practice was focused on serving clients in the entertainment and new media industries, with a focus on music.
