Annual Administrative Report 2009-2010 7.5 Public Works (Roads) Directorate & Mechanical Wing :- (A) P. W. (Roads) Directorate The Public Works (Roads) Directorate has been playing key role in the development and expansion of road infrastructure in the State of West Bengal. At present, in various districts of West Bengal the work of major and minor, important bridges under Core Plan are in progress. With partial financial assistance from the Central Government the construction work of a bridge over River Jalangi at Radhanagarghat in Murshidabad - Nadia border has been started. The construction work of another bridge has been started over River Jalangi at Fazil Nagar in Nadia District under the border area development programme of the Central Government. In the fiscal year the construction work of 10 important bridges has been completed by the P.W. (Roads) Directorate. Among these the bridge connecting the districts of Malda and Uttar Dinajpur, over River Mahananda at Madhabpurghat, the bridge over Sarenga Khal in Howrah District, the bridge over River Ichamati at Dhapdhara, two bridges on Bagda - Duffafulia Road in North 24 Parganas, the bridge over Kashiakhari in the District of Dakshin Dinajpur and the bridge over Dimti Canal in Uttar Dinajpur are worth mentioning here. The work of road connecting Lochan Das Setu over River Ajoy linking districts of Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad has been completed. As a result the transport system has been improved and made faster. Innumerable important bridges have been constructed by the P.W. (Roads) Directorate in almost all the districts of the State in the last three decades. In spite of this, present circumstances demand more bridges for more development of the communication system. For achieving this goal, the plan to construct more bridges, by receiving opinions of the Zilla Parishad, is under consideration. On behalf of the P.W. (Roads) Department the construction work of the bridge over River Dima on the Rajabhatkhaowa - Jaigaon Road in the Jalpaiguri District has been started. In the infrastructural development of the state the work of widening and strengthening of important roads along with construction of some bridges, in almost all the districts of the state is being carried out with loan assistance, primarily from the NABARD. The P.W. (Roads) Department construct flyovers / subways over various rail lines by sharing expenditure with the railway authorities through the Railway Safety Fund Programme. Among the ongoing projects, the work of the flyover at Rangamati on Jhargram Main Road over the South -Eastern Section of the Railways in the district of Paschim Medinipur is nearing completion. Apart from this the work of flyovers at Bagnan, Barrackpore, Durgapur and Baruipur are progressing at a fast pace. All the handicaps and hindrances for the construction of the flyover at Dankuni have been sorted out.
