6HedgeCanalDiversionDam DalyDitchesIrrigationDistrict ProjectDescription DalyDitchesIrrigationDistrict[DDID][Hamilton] wastherecipientof$290,000inAmericanRein vestmentandRecoveryAct[ARRA]fundsin 2009.Thisfundingwasusedtoreplaceanaged timberdiversiondamontheBitterrootRiver southofHamilton. Thisprojectconsistedofreplacingtheexisting timberframediversiondamwithamoresolid damconsistingofa6’vertical,subsurfacecon cretewallsupportinga6’verticalgroutedrock wall.Thisnewstructureservedtostabilizethe riverbankatitsinterfacewithacanaladjacentto theBitterrootRiver,bypassinganuphillspring runningbeneaththecanal,thusenablingcontin uedfunctioningofthedam. History DDIDwasfoundedbyMarcusDalyinthelate 1800sandincludestheHedgeCanalDiversion Dam.Thiscanalwasconstructedadjacenttoand uphilloftheBitterrootRiverintheearly1900s. Ina2001studyofthestructure,theBLMidenti fiedtheDuckCreekDamasa“HighHazard”struc ture.Annualclimatecycleshadledtotheeventual erosionanddeteriorationofthisstructure,neces sitatingitscontinuousrepair.Thisdetermination wasbaseduponthedams’locationrestingupgra dientfromtwocountyroads,TeigenRoadand WelterDivideRoad,theformerofwhichservesas aruralbusroute.
