The present volume is an attempt to fill this gap in our national biography . If I have allowed the historical part of my subject to overbalance the biographical, the reason ’ is that Warristo n s character is almost entirely shown and the interest Of his life almost exclusively found in his public acts . I need not enumerate my sources— they are all well known to students of the period of which I have written . The most recent of these is the Fr agmen t of Me D ia ry ' ' o ir A rc/zzbald ofim fon Lord Wa m sto n M a 21 5! f S j , , y zm e 2 th 1 6 1 8 6 j 5 , 39, printed in 9 by the Scottish History t Society, and edited with In roduction and notes by George F S. A . Morison Paul, M . A . , . Scot This publication has thrown Open an incom parable source of information c regarding the brief but critical period which it overs . I desire to ackn owledge my indebtedness to the Editor for so interesting a historical relic from the pen of War riston , as well as for much valuable biographical material 8 PRE FACE supplied in his Introduction .
