THIRD EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON SOCIAL NETWORKS. EUSN 2017. SEPTEMBER 26 – 29, 2017. JOHANNES GUTENBERG UNIVERSITY. PHILOSOPHICUM. JAKOB-WELDER-WEG 18. MAINZ, GERMANY. Welcome Note Dear Colleagues, It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the Third European Conference on Social Networks (EUSN) 2017 at Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) in Mainz. Like before in Barcelona (2014) and Paris (2016), the EUSN will present a diverse scientific program with more than 300 oral presentations and posters and around 350 participants from 35 different countries – extending well beyond Europe. We are very glad to see that the EUSN has established itself as a major conference on social network analysis in Europe. Besides the paper and poster presentations, the program includes three plenary events. Emmanuel Lazega will give the keynote lecture with the title “Networks and institution building: A neo-structural approach“, which promises new insights into institution building. In addition, two panel discussions will take place. The one on Thursday is organized by the German Society of Network Research and focuses on the importance of Simmel’s work for the field. On Friday, the conference will close with the second panel discussion about social media network data, exploring the possibilities and limitations of process-generated data for social network analysis. Two awards will be announced during the conference: the first for the best poster presentation at the EUSN and the second, sponsored by the "Sociological Network Research" section of the German Society for Sociology (DGS), for an outstanding essay on sociological network research. We would like to thank all those who contributed to the diverse and exciting program: the scientific committee including the session organizers, the workshop organizers, and all speakers, panelists and presenters. In addition, we are very grateful to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the Research Center of Social and Cultural Studies Mainz (SOCUM) the Internal University Research Funding at JGU for financial support and to the International Network for Social Network Analysis (INSNA) for their endorsement. Finally, we would like to thank the Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) for their great hospitality and tremendous support. We hope that you enjoy the scientific program as well as the social events and we express our warm welcome and wish you an exciting and productive time.
