MEDIA COMMISSION Media Monitoring Report The first two weeks of the official election campaign 17 – 30 August, 2005 Media Monitoring Report The first two weeks of the official election campaign (17 August – 30 August 2005) In this report: • The total amount of coverage dedicated to candidates still remains low in the first two weeks of the official campaign. However, there is a small intensification compared to the findings of pre-election period: from an average of a couple of minutes per broadcaster to about five minutes. This is mainly due to the Sponsored Advertisement Program. • Total number of identified Sponsored Advertisement Programs broadcast in the first two weeks of the election period counts for 311. • Among the candidates with the greatest coverage on the monitored media in the indicated period, 72% are running to WJ and 28% to Provincial Councils; 84% are male and 16% female candidates. • Except for Ms. Noorzia Atmer who is a presenter still currently working on the state- owned RTA Nangarhar Radio, no other presenter running as candidate has been found on air in the first two weeks of the election campaign. The request made by the Media Commission not to give unfair advantage to journalists running as candidates was successfully implemented. RTA TV is the nation-wide state-owned TV channel that broadcasts from Kabul. • No presenters running as candidate have been on air in this first two weeks of the election campaign. • Abul Ghaffar Dawi is the husband of Shukria Barakzia is the editor-in-chief of the weekly Aina-e-Zan (see also Anis Daily). • Mr. Atiqullah was killed in Urozgan at the end of August. • Usatad Abdurab Rasool Sayaf is the Leader of Dawat-e-Islami Afghanistan. • Burhan-u-Deen Rabanee was the second president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan after the fall of the last government supported by Russia. He is the current leader of Jameat- e-Islami Afghanistan. • Saeed Mustafa Kazimi was Minister of Trade during the interim and transitional administrations of President. Karzai. He was interviewed for about half an hour about elections in Iran and relation between the two countries. • Sebghatullah Sanjar is the leader of the Republican Party of Afghanistan. • Humayoon Jarir was the Cyprus Representative of Mujahiddin in Bonn Conference and also he is the son-in-law of Mr. Gulbuddin Hekmatyar the Leader of Islamic Party of Afghanistan. • Ghows Zalmai is an independent Afghan Journalist coming back from west now retired. • Bashar Dost is the ex Planning Minister of Karzai’s interim cabinet who is mostly critical about the financial policies of the current government.
