As acentral commu- nicativetool of Ottoman society, poetry both shaped the social milieu and was shaped by it. Thus,ifweare to achieveacomprehensiveunderstanding of pre- modern Ottoman society, we do well to consider the vital and intricate role played by poetry. Today avolume on premodern Ottoman poetry produced in Germanymight come as asurprise. Although significant publications haveappeared in Turkey and in the UnitedStates, premodern Ottoman literature has been neglected in Europe in recent decades. This volume gathers significant work undertaken by scholars from Austria,Germany,Hungary, and Turkey.Itdeveloped out of a workshop held at the University of Bonn in 2014, and it has been extended by further contributions. We hope to show how beneficial an international network on premodern poetry can be, and so to build on the recent works of Hatice Aynur and Angelika Neuwirth.1 Throughout the 1960’sEuropean Ottoman scholars were intensely interested in poetry. The Fundamenta Philologicae constituted amilestone in literary re- search, and it has remained an important work of reference.2 Alessio Bombaci laid emphasis onʿilm al-bala¯ g˙ at (knowledgeofrhetoric), underlining the com- mon ground in Arabic, Persian
