Created by Francis L. Monachino, who join ed the Tulan e faculty in 1967 as an associat e pro­ fessor of music , th e Summ er Lyric Th eatre , com­ bined with th e Opera Workshop credit cours e, is conc eived as a joint end eavor by the univ er­ sity and th e community to establish a regional theatr e. The multi -purpose project combines services of a univ ersity setting with a strong sens e of identity with the com­ munity. With a broad professional background , pri­ marily in singing, th e program 's director and produc er, Mr. Monachino , initiat ed the project as a joint end eavor b ecause he believes that most cities have difficulty in maintaining theatre and opera programs. Rising costs and community apathy , as well as lack of opportunity for de­ velopm ent of young tal ent ed performers, are pr evalent on th e urban scene today. So ha s been with th e Grass roots Ope ra in No rth Carolina . the Tulane Lyric Th eatr e and Opera Workshop becam e a r eality , serving with the New Orleans community to bridge a gap between town and gown in a mutually profitable r elationship. The Opera Workshop , a course for graduate or undergraduate credit in the university's Sum­ mer School, gives participants , including teach­ ers, as well as college music and theatre stu­ dents, opportunity to take active part in three musicals pres ented each summer . This series of workshop performances con­ stitutes the Lyric Th eatr e, with George W . Hen­ drickson , Tulane prof essor of theatre and speech , as technical director and associate producer , and Leland Bennett, assistant director of the Univer­ sity Center at Tulane , as orchestra dir ector . "I feel like I have one of the best groups of assistant coaches in the country," says Pittman. "They are not only fine coaches on the field, they do an outstanding job in the office and in recruiting." The main station is located on the ground level in the northwest corner of the stadium , and additional stat ions are maintained at the northeast , south­ east and southwest corners on the ground level and under the west stands near the north 20-yard line .
