THE PHILIPPINES AND FOOD PHILIPPINES The Philippines has established itself as one of the world’s most robust and promising markets. Since 2010, the Philippines has been one of the fastest-rising global economies in terms of gross domestic product (GDP). In 2016, the country grew by 7.1 percent in its 3rd quarter, recording the highest in Asia. The Philippines is seen to expand more than 6 percent until 2018 to rank among the fastest-growing in the world, according to Bloomberg. A backbone of this major breakthrough is the country’s manufacturing industry, contributing around 23-24% of the annual GDP. One of its primary sectors is food, which accounts for nearly half of the country’s total manufacturing output. As of 2016, the Philippines’ food manufacturing growth remains the second fastest in Southeast Asia. Labor productivity also recorded a significant increase by as high as 6% in 2015. Another economic driver is the surge of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that are becoming more globally competitive in exploring new market innovations, technologies, and products. As of 2015, the Philippines has 896,839 MSMEs, according to the ABOUT THE SHOW Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
