This small book contains brief biog ra phies of six score of the more notable persons of Bolivia . It is not to be supposed that i su ch a list is exhaustive or complete ; that would be impossible , even if desirable , but it is believed that those whose lives are here contained are worthily representative of their country . They include both men and women; they are drawn from all parts o f the country and from all walks of life ; they embrace Artists , Authors , Churchmen , Di l om at s p , Engineers , Explorers , Journalists , L Ofii cial s awyers , Merchants , Poets , Public , and . Exhibit ing the background and scenery upon which the drama is enacted—“ the vast extent of of u nd evel the country , with its stretches Oped , unexplored and almost unknown ter rit or of y , and the great mass Indian population , they reveal also the you thful of vigor , energy , and optimism the Bolivian people . Within the limitations of space imposed by the conditions of the task , the editor has striven to produce biographies which should be neither bald summaries nor mere ou t “ " t o lines , but genuine , miniature lives , and convey some of the flavour and quality of personality . The obligations which the editor has in in his curred task are many , and these he gratefully acknowledges . He pays his sin cere thanks f or counsel and gu idance t o Senores Manuel Vicente Ballivian and Al fredo Jauregu i Rosqu ell as : for valuable aid . E . and cooperation to Dr and Mrs . Sturgis H I S P A N I C N O T E S F O R E WO R D L n . eavitt , Se or Saturnino Rodrigo and Mr I l a ro ld . K Coulson , and for both counsel and cooperation alike to Senor Eduardo re Diez de Medina . He takes pleasure in cording also his obligations to the represen t a t ives o f La of the press Paz , whose cour his tesy and consideration made task lighter , as likewise to the whole company o f the subjects o f the biographies for their indis pensable collaboration . So agreeable and i kind l y , in fact , was the social atmosphere as t o make him regret those circumstances , in which the altitude of the capital played a large part , that prevented him from remain ing long enough to pu blish the book in the country of its origin . \V .
