1 Introduction Ido is a planned language, which competed for a long time with Esperanto. Ido was elaborated to a large extent by Louis Couturat (1868-1924), a brilliant French philosopher, who had a great interest in mathematics and logic.1 Couturat’s aim was to construct a language, on the basis of Esperanto, to facilitate intellectual endeavours. So he aimed for a precise language, with great capacity for semantic analysis. He considered that the language must be capable of continuous perfectibility, in accordance with the evolution of scientific knowledge. In 1901, on the occasion of the Universal Exposition in Paris, Couturat founded a Delegation for the Adoption of an International Language. He probably developed this plan on the basis of experiences during the First International Conference of Philosophers, which took place in the same year in Paris. To start with, many of his colleagues, and other Esperantist scientists, agreed to take part. The Esperantists helped in spreading knowledge of the Delegation. So it received many new adherents, members and supporters. The intention was to press the International Association of Academies to agree to select one of the many planned languages hitherto proposed. The Delegation grew steadily in size and importance. Many people of importance in the fields of science and politics took part as members. Many commercial and cultural institutions joined. But in 1907 the congress of the Association of Academies decided not to address the matter, considering itself not competent in the subject. The Committee of the Delegation then itself decided, in the form of a special commission, to select the planned language to be recommended. Everyone believed that Esperanto would be that language, not only because of the number of Esperantists within the Delegation, but also and mainly because of the large growth in the Esperanto movement in the years 1900-1907. At the end of 1907 the Commission convened in Paris. It decided to adopt Esperanto in principle, but on condition of reforms being introduced, reforms presented to it by the mysterious “Ido”, in a booklet specially printed for the purpose but which no-one had previously seen. Couturat was unable to obtain the consent of the Esperantists to his plan. All the more so, as Louis de Beaufront, the “advocate” di Esperanto before the Delegation, declared himself to be the author of Ido. Around Ido a small movement began and rapidly grew. The Ido Academy, soon founded, worked on the language and adopted many reforms and “improvements” until 1913. Then it decided to begin a “period of language stability”. Since the continuous reform had hindered the development of the Ido movement, and it was also disadvantageous economically since text-books and dictionaries became outdated too quickly. The growth of the Ido movement ceased for the first time in 1914 because of the outbreak of war, and on account of the unexpected death of Couturat in a motoring accident. After the war, the rebirth of Ido was rapid and intense. But the various fashisms, the second world war, internal linguistic disagreements, and the birth of new planned langauges hindered the spread of Ido, which after the 1930s fell back considerably. Now there remains a small movement which still publishes its magazine, Progreso. Our catalogue aims to preserve a detailed bibliographical knowledge of the linguistic creation called “Ido”, which is the only project (with the exception of Esperanto and Volapük), in which many magazines and books have appeared, in which spoke not only propagantists but also married couples 1 Information about Couturat can be found in the following books: Louis de Beaufront: Louis Couturat. We began this work in 1975, with the hope of finishing it in 1978 at the time of the 70th anniversary of Ido. But it appears only now, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary. We have both been working hard, but much work needed to be done during this 20-year delay, and a bibliography of Ido was perhaps not one of our most important tasks. The book presents first a List of books according to the year of appearance. There follows a List of books by author and by title. A third part deals with the book collections, and finally there is a list of magazines and periodicals which have appeared in Ido. Obviously our work is not perfect, since we were unable to have in our hands all the works mentioned. Some books and magazines are known to us only by being mentioned in articles, catalogues or reviews. But we have indicated this. The editor was Tazio Carlevaro. Reinhard Haupenthal has carefully revised the whole work in detail; his contribution did not consist only of those titles which he himself possesses or which he has seen with his own eyes. We used three important bibliographic books, well-known to all1. We will be very
