To sell a limited quantity of tickets to the highest quality event experience, bar none, celebrating music, art and life in an intimate, visually stunning environment; and to embody our values day-to-day within the organization, balancing relaxed style and a chill authenticity with detail orientation and high-quality work standards.” History of FloydFest FloydFest was conceived by musician, promoter, and co-founder Kris Hodges, and began as a love for all of the best that live entertainment could offer. Hodges’ passion for deep roots music led him from Virginia, where he performed music across the mid- Atlantic in high school, to studying Music Business at the Atlanta Art Institute and at the University of GA. While in school Kris’ professor suggested that “hitting the streets” would be the best education. Kris left for the smoky bars that comprise the touring musicians’ landscape and then to a one-room chicken shack in the Appalachian mountains where he studied ethnomusicology and philosophy, and finally to the Ghanian bush, where he met traditional African musicians, eventually returning stateside and managing The African Showboyz for a two-year stint including the ‘40 days and 40 nights’ tour w/ Karl Denson which introduced the Showboyz to the US festival scene. Throughout the journey, Hodges learned many facets of the music business and saw the real need for an event that was more than ‘just another concert;’ one which modeled social consciousness through music and art. Together with his life partner Erika Johnson, Hodges opened an intimate music venue and eatery, OddFella’s Cantina, in the year 2000, simultaneously birthing their production company, Across-the-Way Productions. An under-the-radar cultural hotspot, the one- stoplight peaceful farming community of Floyd was also a mecca for musicians, artisans, and nature-lovers. Regularly featuring acts such as Norman Blake, John Renbourn, Pete Seeger, Paddy Keenan and Rhonda Vincent in a uniquely intimate environment, Oddfella’s added to the burgeoning tourist appeal of Floyd and garnered a widespread reputation for its roster of entertainment and locally-sourced menu items. Dreaming ever bigger, Hodges and Johnson sold the restaurant and with a small personal investment FloydFest was born in 2002, on 80 acres off the stunningly beautiful non-commercial Blue Ridge Parkway. In its infancy the venue was a recovered pasture with a newly graveled service road and rented stages. Through vision and hands-on tenacity, by year three FloydFest boasted a one-of-a- kind timber framed Dreaming Creek Main Stage that made it clear the festival had staying power. More infrastructure additions followed, as did nine additional unique stage arenas, including the Streamline Stage at Hill Holler, the Speakeasy Vaudeville Revue, the Virginia Folklife Workshop Porch, and the Pink Floyd Garden Stage, among others. FloydFest’s dedication to family-friendliness, audience diversity, outdoor activities and conscious environmentalism, coupled with a commitment to showcasing the highest quality multi-genre musical line-up, have made it the hottest ticket on the East Coast festival scene. In 2013 FloydFest sold out to a capacity crowd of 18,000 per day. Industry Recognition FloydFest 2012: Uniquely blended with love to spare Best Southern Event, Readers’ Revered for an eclectic lineup based in roots music, Floyd Fest 11 presented acts like Alison Choice Award, 2015 Krauss, Bruce Hornsby, Ricky Skaggs and Jackson Browne, right alongside Galactic, Ozomatli, Gary USA Today Clark Jr. and Matisyahu. Combined with brass bands, marching bands, Gospel bands, magicians, jugglers and trapeze artists, the five day festival was a delicious buffet of talented performers. The setting is a true reflection of the surrounding community. Floyd is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the festival is held at a permanent site at the top of the mountains. The beauty is remarkable, and the residents take its stewardship seriously: trash disposal consisted of a series of cans marked either recyclable, compost or landfill; the food vendors – many of whom are local – provided a wide variety of organically grown fare; there were an endless line of local artisans ringing the festival’s main grounds, selling handmade crafts, many out of recycled products.
