What originally began as one idea has now transformed into something entirely different... and might I add, for the better. Due to a host of different issues, the show has made a complete transformation. After over a month of rehearsals we had to completely revamp our vision and concept for the show including music, choreography, and location. Throughout this process I have encountered a hard-working, flexible cast and staff. We have had to learn quickly, make last-minute changes, and put a whole lot of trust into our process. I’m thankful for everyone’s commitment to continue to be a part of a show that wasn’t sure exactly what it was. In tonight’s performance, you will be taken back to the 1950s. As you travel to several different locations on the campus of La Habra High School you might encounter a rebellious greaser, a preppy cheerleader, or even an overachieving bookworm. We invite you to go back in time to experience teenagers telling a story of dance and rock n’ roll. Tonight is the first Theater Guild performance for many of the dancers in the cast. I’m excited for you to see their characters come to life and hope that you dance alongside them at the Highlander Hop. Now, get ready to “rock around the clock tonight!” Let’s go to the hop: The Highlander Hop Annie Lavin LA HABRA THEATER GUILD | 5 78 TH LA HABRA THEATER GUILD PRODUCTION FEBRUARY 14 – 23, 2019 Little Women BOOK BY Allan Knee LYRICS BY Mindi Dickstein MUSIC BY Jason Howland BASED ON THE NOVEL BY Louisa May Alcott DIRECTED BY Erika & Brent Schindele Little Women is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). She embarked on the book with reluctance, at the request of her publisher Thomas Niles in 1868, and neither she nor he were particularly pleased with the opening chapters. However, those chapters were also shown to Niles’ niece and some other girls, who found them enchanting, so Alcott persevered and was pleasantly surprised by her finished work’s immediate critical and commercial smash success. The title refers both to the four young March sisters’ critical “in-between” ages, as they bridge the gap between girlhood and womanhood, and also to their humbler social standing: Alcott’s heroines were not wealthy duchesses or powerful princesses, yet their strengths and virtues were apparent, and appealed to young readers at all strata of American society. Little Women is generally regarded as a semi-autobiographical novel, and Alcott drew on the different strengths of her own family in creating her various characters. This illustrates one of our show’s messages–the oft-repeated author’s axiom that the writer should begin by writing what she knows. But it also illustrates what most drew us to this story–the strength found in simple, ordinary families that love and are committed to each other, especially in times of crisis or war. At the time of the play, America is still riven by the Civil War, and the Marches are emblematic of the kind of bedrock families that stayed true to each other and whose quiet, unsung heroism helped uphold the country, even in the absence of the family patriarch. When Jo asks her mother, “How can I be like you? How can I find your strength?”, Marmee replies with typical quiet understatement: “Don’t make so much of me, Jo.” We love and admire these sorts of people, and Little Women lets us spend a lot of time in their company. We hope you enjoy your time with them and their adventures, too.
