Dr. Army Armstrong Rocky Mount The 1931 Shaw University graduate was the executive director of the North Carolina High School Athletic Conference, the organization for black high schools…oversaw over 100 high schools as well as organizing classified championships in several sports during 15 years with the NCHSAC…assisted those same schools with joining the NCHSAA when the two organizations merged in 1968…born in Edgecombe County, coached at one point at Ligon High in Raleigh…member of the Shaw University and NCHSAA Halls of Fame. Catherine Armwood Durham School of Arts Native of Durham and a graduate of North Carolina Central with an undergraduate degree in science and a master’s degree in physical education…served as athletic director at Durham High and the Durham School of the Arts from 1980 through 2005…additionally coached tennis and softball while serving as a teacher at Brogden Middle School, Durham High and Durham School of the Arts between 1971 and 2003…two-time Big-Six Conference Softball Coach of the Year…winner of the NCHSAA’s Athletic Director’s Award in 2003.
