Wafu School of Ikebana 2012 Flower Show 清雅 Ikebana by Chapter President Fusako Hoyrup Hoyrup Fusako President Chapter by Ikebana Autumn Spectacular OFFICE OF MAYOR MARK SANTORO CITY HALL 10300 TORRE AVENUE • CUPERTINO, CA 95014-3255 TELEPHONE: (408) 777-3191 • FAX: (408) 777-3366 [email protected] October 20, 2012 Dear Friends: On behalf of the Cupertino City Council, please accept our heartfelt congratulations to the Wafu School of Ikebana, California Chapter on its 42nd Anniversary. Events such as yours promote better understanding of the Japanese culture and encourage the rich diversity that makes Silicon Valley, specifically Cupertino, a wonderful place to live and work. Your students and staff have continually shown their skill by training high quality, hard working artists. Their arrangements are so stunning they should be in a museum. These students serve as inspiration to all who care about and are influenced by the arts. In the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan last year, I am sure that this event will inspire hope and faith in the determinative spirit of creation. Again, congratulations on your 42nd Anniversary and best wishes for continued success. Sincerely, Mark Santoro Mayor CONSULATE GENERAL OF JAPAN 50 FREMONT STREET, 23RD FLOOR SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA 94105 TELEPHONE: (415) 777-3533 FAX: (415) 974-3660 I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to the Wafu School of Ikebana, California Chapter for its 2012 Flower Show. The Bay Area has a wealth of cultural diversity, and groups representing Japanese traditional arts help in so many ways to add to that richness. I commend the Wafu School of Ikebana, California Chapter for all their hard work in promoting Japanese culture through Ikebana in California for the past 42 years. The President of the Wafu School of Ikebana, California Chapter, Ms. Fusako Hoyrup, has pointed out the importance of the mutual appreciation that Americans and Japanese alike have for nature. Of course, the significance of nature in Japan and the United States can be seen in Ikebana, but it is also evident in our mutual love for cherry trees. This is an important year for Japan-US relations, as it marks the Japan-US Cherry Blossom Centennial where we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the cherry trees gifted to the United States by Japan. It is wonderful that we can use flowers and cherry trees as symbols to enhance our mutual friendship. Finally, I would like to commend all of you who have been a part of the Wafu School of Ikebana, California Chapter, whether you are a teacher or student, for your efforts, dedication, and commitment in promoting the beautiful art of Ikebana. Sincerely, Hiroshi Inomata Consul General of Japan 〒154東京都世田谷区桜新町1-21-13 財団法人 勅使河原 和風会 TEL 03 (3428) 8221 (代) FAX 03 (3428) 8222 Congratulations on the California Chapter 42nd Anniversary Flower Show! Among the many accomplishments by Chapter President Hoyrup and the members of the California Chapter over the years, the 42nd anniversary flower show will undoubtedly stand out as the biggest success of all. Chapter President Hoyrup, along with the members of the California Chapter and Mr. John Hoyrup, a great supporter of Wafu-kai Ikebana, have accomplished amazing things together. I believe that they will continue to give the joy of Ikebana to a countless number of people, regardless of nationality or language. Teshigahara Wafu-kai is extremely proud of Chapter President Hoyrup, all the members of the California Chapter, and Mr. Hoyrup, the only honorary Shukan of Teshigahara Wafu-kai. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the City of Cupertino and the Fremont Union High School District Adult and Community Education program, which have been very supportive of Wafu-kai. Please enjoy the Wafu-kai Ikebana Show to the fullest. Sincerely, Headmaster Wafu Teshigahara Juridical Foundation Teshigahara Wafu-kai Dear Friends & Visiting Guests, My students and I are deeply honored to present our “Autumn Spectacular” Flower Show at the Cupertino Quinlan Community Center. I am profoundly touched by how our Wafu School of Ikebana California Chapter has grown from a small group of students more than four decades ago, to more than 200 dedicated and artistically accomplished students. This all grew from a very modest dream I had years ago that there should be a forum for anyone, regardless of age, heritage or cultural differences, to learn the art of Ikebana through the shared language of beauty. My heart is beaming with happiness when I see the spirits and dedication of my students. It is also extremely rewarding to see some of my students continuing on with the teaching of Ikebana with students of their own. I hope the “Autumn Spectacular” Flower Show will be an inspiration to our friends and guests. In the aftermath of the horrific earthquake and tsunami in Japan last year and all the suffering and atrocities happening around the world, we hope the beauty of Ikebana can help lift the spirit and bring some joy to every one of our visitors. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Mr. Wafu Teshigahara, Headmaster of Wafu School, and Japan headquarters for their support. I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to the City of Cupertino and the Adult and Community Education Division of the Fremont Union High School District for co-sponsoring this flower show. My heartfelt appreciation goes to my students for their hard work and dedication to the art of Ikebana and to my beloved husband, John Hoyrup. To our friends and guests, welcome and enjoy the show!
