To Brave the Storm is a bit different than the rest of the books in the Romulan War series in that it is more action heavy and attempts to resolve all open story threads. All the more-so because the final pages of the book seem to read like not just an ending to this Romulan War story-line, but to the entire Enterprise story-line as well. NOOK Book. The writing and the care with the original research are well over average which is the main reason for my good grading of the book, but it would not have taken magic to turn a well written book intro an extraordinary one and much of this missing impact is IMO to charge towards the editors which have decided that a single book of pages would be enough to cover this wide field. This is absolutely ridiculous. All these and other plot elements come to their conclusion in this final volume. I'd think that the story that could have been told and the willingness of the Enterprise fans to buy such books would have justified at least a five parter and maybe even a whole series like the "Time to" or Gateway titles - if need would have been there even with installments in the nearly related series for TOS, Vanguard or SCE dealing with aspects and persons that would reach further than only the ENT cast and landscape. At the climactic Battle of Cheron, the Earth fleet is saved twice by the sudden appearance of allied ships. I was hoping for an explanation or rational for Starfleet only using nuclear weapons, but I guess the other vessels had nuclear weapons and Spock only mentioned that it was MOSTLY found with primitive subatomic weapons. Take out as many of your enemies as possible? I think it could have gone into more depth and still been just as readable.. But the tattered remains of Starfleet stand unwavering, with the resolution that never again would any enemy strike ever reach Earth. Nothing could recreate the heartbreak of his apparent death on the TV show anyhow. Desperate battles are fought as the Romulans continue to take systems closer and closer to Earth. Only the Starship Enterprise is fast enought to stop the production of a second Xindi weapon. It was also a big let down to see such a narrow focus on just the main characters and events considering the previous novel had done such a great job in giving a more panoramic view of the war and it how it affected everyone, including regular citizens.
