(Open daily 09.00 to 18.00 (Weds + Frt to 13.00) Editor's Note These are not easy days for Israel, and trepidation about what will happen in the new year is perhaps as common a feeling as hope. The state of the economy, the divisions in our national fabric, the continuing problems in Lebanon — all these contribute to a state of unease. But when have things ever been easy for the people of Israel? The fact that we have chosen to make our home here is an act of faith, just as in the Tora portion read on Rosh Hashana, Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his beloved son was a trial of faith which was rewarded. May the new year bring peace and prosperity to the state of Israel. Best regards. 4 A Message from the President of the State of Israel, Mr. Chaim Herzog delivered at the 38th South African Zionis Conference in Johannesburg, in August, 1984. Closest to our hearts in Israel is aliyah. It is sterling human material which has come to us from South Africa, leaving its mark on the development of agriculture and industry, settlement and defense, medicine and law and scientific research. Israel would be different and would lose much without its South African element. E(lucation and aliyah are linked. Educated youth from abroad will find in Israel the challenge of sophisticated and modern technology. It is my ardent hope that Israel will beckon to many in South Africa. It is no small thing to build a future on the foundation of one's history, upon the prayers and hopes of generations. We live in fateful times and must as Jews make fateful decisions. We have our opportunity. Let us not lose it. □ New Year Greeting From the Chairman, Mr. Morris Borsuk The New Year always brings opportunity and challenge to all of us, and we add the hope that the climate for aliyah will change in the coming years and encourage olim. Their added presence will help change those things which affect the quality of life here. South Africans have, and will continue to play, a serious role in the upbuilding of the state, which is far from its target. But despite all kinds of problems, its eventual road and destination is clear to us all. We pray we will all be blessed with a happy and healthy year and fulfillment of our dreams, and that peace and tranquility will descend on all Israel. 5 COVER STORY New Directions In 5745 Members of the committee are, in Johannesburg: Adv.
