Never is the discrepancy more striking than in the director’s chair where

women make up a measly 7% of all directors. Only one woman has won a Best Directing

Oscar and only four have been nominated. But these sad statistics don’t reflect that women are creating some of the most exciting and innovative films around. Here’s a short

list to get you started: Kathryn Bigelow - The only female director to win an Oscar, she has been steadfast in making the films she wants; serious movies for adults. Check out: The Hurt Locker (2008) – An incredibly intense film about soldiers assigned to a bomb disposal unit in Baghdad. Winner of six Academy Awards including Best Director. Nancy Meyers- A female auteur, her films are the equivalent of being wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with a warm cup of cocoa. Watch: Something’s Gotta Give (2003): This very grown-up comedy stars Jack Nicholson as a lifetime swinger with a taste for younger women. When he suffers a heart attack at the home of his latest trophy girlfriend, he finds himself developing an attraction for her mother (Diane Keaton). Sofia Coppola - Coming from cinematic royalty (her father is Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Godfather), she has proven herself a sensitive and thoughtful writer and director. Required viewing:

Food for Fines

To celebrate this week, all of the

libraries are offering a “Food for Fines” promotion. Bring in a non-

perishable food item (please no damaged or expired items) and the library will waive $1.00 of library fines for every item you donate. All food will go to local food banks.

Lost in Translation (2003): A faded movie star and a lonely young woman form a rocky friendship when their paths cross in Tokyo. Coppola won an Oscar for her writing and was nominated for her directing. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson star. Jane Campion- New Zealand born writer/director Campion now makes her home in Australia. She is known for her female-centric themes. Don’t miss:

Plant Sale Returns!

Mira Nair - Born in India and educated at Harvard, Nair began her career as an actor and documentarian. Her films give an intimate look into the Indian culture and family structure. A must see: Monsoon Wedding (2001): Set in the upper middle class, this story of an arranged marriage in New Delhi shows the striking contrast between the modern and ancient traditions of contemporary India. Lina Wertmuller- The first woman to be nominated for Best Director, she is known for her whimsical and lengthy titles that were shortened for international release. My favorite: Swept Away (1974): A rich spoiled woman and a communist deckhand are stranded together on an island where their roles become reversed. This film shows how the societal framework of rich and poor can be a delicate balance.
The Friends of the Ledding Library annual plant sale will be held on Saturday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pond House.
