Today it is a museum, a venue for cultural events, a research centre, and also houses part of the Esterházy dynasty’s unique private collection. In the 20th century, the “Great Hall” was rena- med Haydn Hall and, boasting superb acoustics and deco- ration, it is now regarded as a jewel among concert halls worldwide. In 2020 the Haydn Hall will again provide a breathtaking setting for the concert series classic.Esterhazy and for the HERBSTGOLD – Autumn Festival in Eisenstadt, which will fill the hall with music from 9 to 20 September. Austrian and international musicians as well as guests from all over the world are impressed by this unique combina- tion of musical highlights and magnificent decoration and architecture. Appreciate glimpses of a life full of highs and lows as you find out about her ambitious career and her personal world away from the stage. You will get to know a strong personality who grew with the challenges she faced. Room by room you can walk through the stages in Melinda Ottrubay’s life, as if traversing the scenes of an opera. You will get to know the protagonist in her early life, as a trainee and prima ballerina assoluta, and later as an Esterházy princess. In five acts, the exhibition guides you through the life of the last prince and princess in the family’s primogeniture line – Melinda and Paul Esterházy V. 9 Exhibitions at Esterházy Palace Palace Tour Fascinating women – moving stories The palace tour shows the magnificent apartment of the Esterházy princesses and provides a glimpse into the lives and worlds of three charismatic ladies: Maria Josefa Hermenegilde, née Princess Liechtenstein, passionate patroness of Joseph Haydn; Maria Theresia, née Princess von Thurn und Taxis, lionized beauty at the Congress of Vienna, and Lady Sarah Child-Villiers. Meet personalities from the past and discover the fascinating and moving stories of their loves, marital bliss and troubles. A further highlight of this tour is the 17th-century Palace Chapel. The organ dates back to the time of Joseph Haydn and was frequently played by the great composer. The tour also includes the Haydn Hall, now world famous for its acoustics and an inspiration to Haydn in his day. 11 Exhibitions at Esterházy Palace Haydn Ticket Virtuoso craftsmanship & musical mastery The Haydn ticket includes two exhibitions and compellingly captures the life of Joseph Haydn, offering insights into the music, festivals and lifestyle at the Esterházy court. Haydn explosive Joseph Haydn served the Esterházy princes as Hofkapell- meister and composer for some 40 years. Multimedia sta- tions, project installations, and unusual exhibits offer an insight into the life of this musical genius – from his early compositions in Eisenstadt to stardom in London and his late work – and also explore his influence as a composer both in the past and the present. Included in the displays are the maestro’s personal and professional documents as well as original instruments like the fortepiano that belonged to his patron Princess Maria Josefa Hermenegilde. Highlights of Esterházy Palace This unique tour presents important art-historical exhibits from the collection and an impression of the lavish life and festivities at the princely court. Attractions include the Esterházy silverware – the world’s largest surviving Neoclassical silver tableware service – and a console table from the workshops of Giuseppe Briati in Venice. This exhibition also includes some fascinating glimpses of the palace’s past in the building itself. In a few places the original walls and floors have been uncovered revealing the layers of history contained within an over three-hundred- year-old palace. 13 Exhibitions at Esterházy Palace Wine Museum A cellar full of culture Why not explore Austria’s largest wine museum? In the over 300-year-old vaults of the palace, there are 700 unique objects relating to wine and wine-making just waiting to be discovered – from historic barrels to Burgenland’s ol- dest Baumpresse (a basket wine press). Encounter the long history of Esterhazy’s “bacchanalian” side! For even back in 1666, the palace’s cellars could accommodate tens of thousands of litres, and servants – including Joseph Haydn – would sometimes be paid in “pails” of wine.
