Czech-Slovak Wikipedia (and cross-language cooperation in general) -- [[User:Blahma|Marek BLAHUŠ]] WM CEE 2013, Modra (SK), 2013-11-15 Affiliations ● ELiSo = Esperanto kaj Libera Scio (Esperanto and Free Knowledge) – WM User Group since 2013-04-04 – unites Esperanto-speaking WM contributors ● Wikimedia Czech Republic – member since 2012 ● Masaryk University, Brno (CZ) – NLP programmer in Language Centre ● E@I Czech-Slovak Wikipedia ● not a new language edition of Wikipedia! – unlike Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia etc. ● a wikiproject born within the Czech Wikipedia – soon to be active also in the Slovak Wikipedia – a cross-wiki wikiproject (but not on Meta…) ● "Czech-Slovak" („česko-slovenská“), not "Czechoslovak" or "Czecho-Slovak" – forget about the "hyphen war"! (1990) The Czechoslovak affair ● Czechoslovakia (1918–1992) – common country of the Czechs, the Slovaks, ... – multilingual country, later federation of two states – strong passive understanding of Czech/Slovak ● "Velvet divorce" (1 January 1993) – Czech Republic, Slovak Republic – independent countries met again in the EU (2004) – extraordinary relationships but still "abroad" Czech & Slovak language ● both are West Slavic languages – along with Polish, Upper/Lower Sorbian, Kashubian ● close linguistic similiarty – own subgroup within West Slavic languages? – language continuum, two standards – "Czecho-Slovak" nation/language in WW1 politics ● close linguistic similiarty (mutually intelligible) – common practice: speak yours & understand theirs Current situation (1993+20) ● Slovaks still in touch with Czech language – books, movies, songs, food, work & study, L10n ● young Czechs do not understand Slovak – some even prefer speaking English – Slovak students at Czech universities help ● joint Czech-Slovak initiatives – inter-governmental agreement on language use – "CzechSlovak idol", www.slovake.eu Czech-Slovak Wikipedia's goals ● to foster and formalize mutually profitable cooperation between the Czech & Slovak WP – contribute to their growth (cs: 279K, sk: 189K) – help revive cultural and linguistic exchange ● common Wikipedia is not a good idea – distinct languages, not just an issue of alphabets – divergent tendencies in language development – not following the ex. of Serbian or Chinese WP Scope of the wikiproject ● technical aids for readers and writers – prominent display of article in the other language – translation gadget based on machine translation ● keeping pace with each other by sharing – systemizing the current practice of cs<->sk translations – bringing communities closer to each other ● supporting the creation of new articles – on common past and current development – Czech articles on Slovak municipalities and v. v. The translation gadget ● button in the toolbar, activated in Preferences ● currently in beta non-public testing ● uses wikitext in DOM by Visual Editor's Parsoid ● translates plain text through Google Translate – cs<->sk is an exception – not mediated through en ● performs many bot-like edits on the result – to compensate for pitfalls of the translation engine – localize NS, links through Wikidata, infoboxes… sk: Územie obce bolo osídlené už na prelome 11. a 12. storoč ia.
