Magic Wagon Catalog 2017 By: Sydney Beckman With Special Thanks to: The Magic Wagon Team, Tony Curtis, Simon Corneille, Ted Tamburo, Andy Martin, John Talbot and Rhett Bryson i Preface I came late to the Magic Wagon party, so to speak. Although I have compiled this catalog, the contents are primarily a compilation of the work, dedication and love of the Magic Wagon products by the Magic Wagon team and individuals such as Tony Curtis, Simon Corneille, Ted Tamburo, Andy Martin and the many lovers and collectors of these small pieces of art that have been masterfully created. We, collectively, are also supported by the existence of The Magic Café which has provided a forum throughout the years for all of us communicate with each other, share ideas, thoughts, plots, suggestions and anything else that we can think of with regard to these creations. Although I have little history of Magic Wagon, it is my understanding that the company was “discovered” by Tony Curtis. Through his urging Magic Wagon slowly expanded its offerings to a wider audience and their pieces are collected by individuals all over the world. Many pieces have been designed or heavily influenced by Tony Curtis, Simon Corneille, John Talbot, Rhett Bryson, Danny Selnick, Martin Breese, Howard Baltus, Mr. Thanawat, and I am sure many others who I have failed to identify. For a more detailed history of Magic Wagon, David (aka killertweety on the Café) has written an article which may be found here and was kind enough to permit me to link to it from this catalog. David has some excellent information as well as some unique photographs. I believe that Tony Curtis has had the greatest “outside” influence in consulting and providing the names for many of the effects created by Magic Wagon. In 2013 Simon Corneille created a thread on the Magic Café that has become the primary vehicle for communication among Magic Wagon collectors. Although there are a few threads which discuss various Magic Wagon effects, the primary thread is the place anyone who appreciates Magic Wagon should begin. As of the creation of this version of the catalog, the thread is 146 pages long with over 107,000 views. [Update, as of April 1, 2017 the thread is now 205 pages long with over 156,000 views] It is highly recommended that newcomers read the thread in its entirety. Although it will take some time to get through, the knowledge gained from so many contributors is invaluable to Magic Wagon lovers. Of all of the comments about the Magic Wagon line and their various effects, one of the greatest criticisms has nothing to do with their magic. Rather, it has everything to do with their photographs of their magic. I believe most would agree that their photographs leave something to be desired. Both Tony Curtis and Andy Martin have helped tremendously with their photographs of the Magic Wagon Pieces. Andy’s site (www.MartinsMagic.com) has, I believe, the largest online collection of magic in the world. Andy takes all of his own photographs and they help to bring out the beauty of the Magic Wagon Pieces. Tony also sells many of Magic Wagon’s pieces, when available, on his site (www.TonyCurtisMagic.com). ii Then along came Ted Tamburo. Ted is a photographer by trade and took it upon himself to start photographing many of Magic Wagon’s pieces. I believe that most would agree that Ted has taken the photographing of Magic Wagon’s work to the next level. Much of Ted and Andy’s work is featured throughout this catalog and I cannot thank them enough for permitting me to use their exquisite photographs in this book. Additionally, you may find many on Tony’s website at this address: Ted’s Photographs One of the benefits provided by Simon’s thread in the Magic Café is that it has had the effect of creating a “community” of individuals who appreciate Magic Wagon’s work. Throughout the thread the reader will find suggested handlings, themes, presentations, solutions, and just about anything you can imagine regarding Magic Wagon’s pieces. In that regard, everyone is incredibly helpful and a Café member who needs advice can readily find it on the Café or, can readily find a member that can help. This brings me to the origin of this catalog. As a “relatively” new collector back in 2012 I sought out to find a list of all of the effects created by Magic Wagon. Unfortunately, one did not exist so I decided to create one. I scoured all of the information that I could find and yes, consulted with Magic Wagon too. Unfortunately, Magic Wagon’s records had been destroyed from a flood so they had no way to recreate a record of all of the magic they had created. To my knowledge, this catalog is the definitive guide to all of Magic Wagon’s creations. It has – I believe – a listing of every effect they have ever created along with the date, when available, of its release. It also lists original prices for each piece, pictures and descriptions. Again, without the help of Magic Wagon, Tony Curtis, Simon Corneille, Ted Tamburo, Andy Martin and many others it could not have come to fruition. This latest edition has many new features. Among them are the icons you will find on the upper right-hand of each listing. The first icon will take you to the first page of the Table of Contents which follows this Preface. The second icon will take you to the listing on the Magic Wagon site (if it exists) for that piece and the final icon will take you to the place on the Magic Café where the piece is first discussed. Note that many pieces are discussed and many different places and a search in the Café will help you with specific Magic Wagon effects. Also, as requested by Ed Shern, the Table of Contents includes a “sortable” table. Now, this table contains check boxes that enable you to simply click on a box to “add” an effect to your collection. I hope you find the catalog useful and I hope you love Magic Wagon’s pieces as much as we do.
