This period includes the construction of the stone fort, the historic architectural development of the campus and the years in which Fort Monroe served a significant defensive purpose in Hampton Roads. Infill development after the period of significance lacks significant architectural style and has limited historic relevance. There is some archaeological evidence which predates the period of significance, however, it is inconclusive and requires further study to determine the level of contribution to Fort Monroe.
