
Sports Economy Colorado Springs, Olympic City USA, is often referred to as the Amateur Sports Capital of the United States. The crown jewel of the sports economy in Colorado Springs is unquestionably the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC). Along with the USOPC headquarters and the Olympic & Paralympic Training Center (OPTC), more than 20 National Governing Bodies (NGB) are headquartered here including: USA Cycling, USA Hockey, USA Swimming and others. Including the USOPC and NGB’s, Colorado Springs is home to more than 60 national or international sports organizations. Some 15,000 athletes train at the OPTC on a short-term basis each year, with another 130 training full time through the resident athlete program. Colorado Springs is also home to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum, which broke ground in 2018. Opening in 2020, the Museum will become a premier destination, welcoming people from near and far, and of all ages and backgrounds, to come together in the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Other Colorado Springs sports highlights include: • Colorado Springs hosts national and world-class sports events such as the U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open, the World Cycling Championships, and the USA Boxing National Championships and many others. • The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, an annual automobile and motorcycle hillclimb to the summit of Pikes Peak. The track measures 12.42 miles, and includes more than 156 turns on grades averaging 7.2 percent. • Facilities, including the U.S. Air Force Academy, The Broadmoor World Arena and the OPTC Velodrome, host events year-round. A sports medicine and performance center is planned for a 2020 opening at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. • Education programs at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak Community College and Colorado College prepare the next generation of sports industry professionals. • Colorado Springs Sports Corporation, organized to strengthen Colorado Springs’ position as a leader in youth and amateur sports in the United States, is a leader in the regional sports community. • The Colorado Springs area is home to nearly 260 miles of trails, 209 parks and 14,349 acres of parks and open spaces.
