It has an area of 1,66 million square kilometers, roughly about one-sixth of the total territory of China. Xinjiang is the largest and has the longest boundary line among China's provinces and autonomous regions. It shares 5,600 kilometers of frontier with Mongolia in the northeast; Russia, Kazakhstan, Kirghiszstan, and Tadzhikistan in the west; and Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India in the southwest. Xinjiang is divided into two basins by Mount Tianshan, Dzungarian Basin in the north and Tarim Basin in the south. The Karakorum highway links Islamabad, Pakistan with Kashgar over the Khunjerab Pass. Xinjiang©s lowest point is 155 metres below sea level (lowest point in China). Its highest peak is 8611 metres above sea level on the border with Kashmir. The Xinjiang-Kyrgyzstan border is marked by the Tian Shan mountain range. DAY 6, 3RD AUGUST 2008 HAMI - SHAN SHAN (B/L/D) Today we visit the ancient town of Shanshan and the Kumtag Desert. Shanshan used to be a Chinese kingdom that existed roughly from 200 BCE - 1000 CE at the north-eastern end of the Taklamakan Desert including the Great Salt Lake known as Lop Nur. Because of its strategic position controlling the Southern as well as the Main Silk Road, the kingdom was regularly contested between the Chinese and the Xiongniu, a nomadic people from Central Asia. The Desert of Kumtag is a section of the Taklamakan Desert stretching over an area of approximately 22,8000 square kilometers. It is bordered by Dunhuang in the east and Tian Shan in the north. A noticeable feature of Kumtag Desert is the presence of large accumulations of drift-sand, especially along the foot of the crumbling desert ranges, where it rises into dunes sometimes as much as 250 feet (76m) in height. In the evening you can either camp in the Kumtag Desert or stay overnight in a 3-star-hotel in Shanshan Town. It is said to be the best preserved Uygur ancient village built in a green valley at the foot of the Flaming Mountains (the Gobi Mountain) with ancient Buddhism rock painting and Muslim tombs. You will stay overnight in a 4-star-hotel. DAY 8, 5TH AUGUST 2008 TURPAN - JIAOHE - TURPAN (B/L/D) After breakfast, we will go to the ruins of Jiaohe - located about 10 kilometers west of Turpan - which used to be a strategically important city on the ancient Silk Road some 2'500 years ago and the capital of the former Cheshi State. The city is built on a plateau surrounded by deep, fertile valleys and has no walls as it is protected by the natural fortification of the precipitous cliffs. It used to be a flourishing state capital with Buddhist temples, living quarters and government sections until it was tossed into the reigns of the Turpan, Hui and Mongols at the end of the 8 century and was finally abandoned in the beginning of the 14th century. We will have lunch (local bread, kebab, fruits) in a picturesque orchard and will then explore the Karez System, an irrigation system of wells connected by underground channels, considered as one of the three great ancient projects in China, the other two being the Great Wall and the Grand Canal.
