Hart SCHOOL CURRICULUM, HOMEWORK AND EXAMINATIONS Hours spent on teaching: = 25 per week Timing of School Day 8.30am – 3.20pm (1.15-2.15pm lunch) Ethos and Values within our School The ethos of Chosen Hill encourages young people to have high expectations of themselves, not just in academic terms, but in all areas of their development including moral, spiritual, cultural and social. Our aim is to foster a sense of community based upon the concepts of honesty, respecting the rights and views of others and pride in achievement. Pastoral care arrangements look to the personal and social needs of students and there is a rich and varied programme of activities that develop social and moral awareness. Through Religious Education lessons and school assemblies students are encouraged to think and reflect upon spiritual issues. The school strongly encourages students to develop for themselves a set of socially acceptable values and principles which govern their behaviour. Discipline is firm but fair and there is a clearly defined system for dealing with disciplinary issues. Self-discipline and taking responsibility for one’s actions are also strongly encouraged. ‘Every Child Matters’ (Green Paper, 2003) – sets out the Government’s proposals for reforming the delivery of services for children, young people and families. There are 5 priorities. - Being healthy - Making a positive contribution - Staying safe - Economic well-being - Enjoying and achieving Their vision of a ‘joined up’ service for children already has strong grounding at CHS with our pastoral and guidance systems. Curriculum Arrangements for Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) (228 students) Students are organised into 2 groups of equal ability. Group 1 (CHOSEN) has four classes in it. Group 2 (HILL) also has four groups. Year 7 – The Transition Year Students are taught in their tutor groups which are mixed ability but they are set by ability for Mathematics. During the year students are assessed using NFER CATS testing and teacher assessments to determine their sets in Years 8 and 9.
