Providing nourishment to food insecure children, seniors, and families is at the heart of the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank’s mission. We work hard to fi ll tables and improve lives every day. Unfortunately, the need for our services has not diminished; for that reason, we must strive to fi nd innovative ways to fulfi ll our mission. Food insecurity remains a challenge for many here on the Peninsula. We had one of the highest rates of food insecurity in Virginia last year with 13.8% of our residents facing hunger and a lack of access to adequate food and nutrition. A signifi cant need always demands a signifi cant response. Hunger relief is most successful when we collaborate through a shared passion for service. During fi scal year 2016, we placed an even greater focus on providing nutritious food. Research tells us that food insecurity and poor health are related, so we continue to work to bring nutritious food access to food deserts, low income senior living facilities, and other vulnerable populations through our mobile pantry program. This expanded program provided the equivalent of almost a million meals to those communities—including an abundance of fresh produce! Your support of our mission is invaluable, and we are incredibly grateful for your donations of food, funds, time, and advocacy as we work to provide this nutritious food to our hungry neighbors across the greater Peninsula. As you fl ip through the pages of this gratitude report, you will read about and see pictures of some of the other programs that Virginia Peninsula Foodbank has established to provide food and hope to our community. You will also see the individuals, corporations, organizations, and faith communities that brought food, funds, and other support to our mission. Every can or dollar donated brings us one step closer to closing the hunger and nutrition gap in our community. Thank you for your support of the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank and your help to fulfi ll our important mission! Together, we are providing not only nourishment, but a sense of comfort and hope. With appreciation, Karen L.
