He claims to have been a widely known prophet and evangelist since 1933, with newspapers and magazines from deep in the United States all the way up into Canada printing stories about the signs and wonders God performed through himself, though history records a slightly different story. 1950 was over ten years before Branham’s first prophetic claim. At this time, his healing ministry was in full swing, amazing the crowds with mind reading and predictions about the outcome of their illness. 1950 was about the time that William Branham began teaching that baptism in the name of Jesus Christ was the only true pathway to salvation. He taught that the formula given in Matthew 29:19 was incorrect. According to Branham, all those who were baptized according to the words given by Jesus Christ, “In the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost” had to be re-baptized in the “Name of Jesus Christ.” Matthew 28:19 is the commandment given by Jesus when he gave his great commission. Copyright 2012, www.seekyethetruth.com 5 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Matthew 28:19 The verse containing the great commission ended with a colon, there was more to the commission given by Jesus Christ. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20 Jesus instructed the disciples to teach others to observe (keep) the commandments given by Jesus Christ. Jesus said that he would be with them (and us) always, even to the end of the age. Branham taught that the words of Jesus were misunderstood. According to Branham, Jesus did not mean that we should baptize in the titles of God, that Jesus was the name of the Father. Jesus was the name of the Holy Ghost. Jesus, of course, was the name of the Son. Now, here's the Scripture, Matthew 28:19, only place in the Bible it ever mentioned these titles. Go ye therefore,... teach all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Copyright 2012, www.seekyethetruth.com 6 Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Now, the way you're baptized, is, "in the name of the Father, in the name of the Son, and in the name of the Holy Ghost." That's not even in the Scripture. But it is here, "Teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name." Now, look right at your Bible and see if that says "in the names" or "in the Name." Now, you say... Now, here not long ago, in a meeting, a fellow said, "There's a contradiction in the Bible." Said, "I wish you'd explain it to me. Why did Jesus tell the people to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, Holy Ghost, and Peter turned around and baptized them in the Name of Jesus Christ, in Acts 2:38?" Said, "If that don't contradict itself, I don't see a contradiction!" I said, "Just because you haven't sought God right." He said, "Brother Branham, does it make any difference if I baptize this way or that way?" It certainly does, and I'll prove it by the Bible. What if--what if Moses... My shoes are a little hard to take off, so I'll just take off my hat." He never said "hat," He said, "shoes." And what the Bible says is Truth. 54-0515 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS The Bible refers to the Father many times. Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father. The Bible refers to the Holy Ghost many times. Jesus spoke of the time when the Spirit would come. There was only one way to prove Branham’s theory by the Bible. And that way was to change the words of the scripture. In a prayer, Branham begins praying to the Father. In this prayer, he changes the words of Matthew 28:19. Our heavenly Father, we're thinking of the time that Nathanael came to You. Philip went and got him, and when he came up to Nathanael, he found him praying. And he said to Nathanael, "Come, see Who I've found, Jesus of Nazareth, Who was spoke of by Moses, the prophet." And when he came to the prayer line, O God, we can see the Spirit of God moved Jesus. He said, "There's a Christian. There's a believer, an Israelite indeed," otherwise. And Nathanael said, "When did You know me?" He said, "Before you come, you were praying under a tree." And he said, "Thou art the Son of God, the King of Israel." Oh, You promised that Your Spirit would be with us always, even to the end of the world. And You're here tonight to detect, to tell, and to heal through faith. And Father, we're so thankful that You said, "A little while and the world will see Me more--no more. Yet you'll see Me, for I will be with you, even in you, to the end of the world." 50-0405 EXPECTATION It was such a subtle change. Just as the serpent beguiled Eve by adding one simple word to change the meaning of the sentence, Branham adds words to change the meaning of the sentence. Not one, but three: even in you. No accepted translation of the Bible contains these words, not even the King James Version.
