That visit was a turning point for HDH. In the fi ve dizzying years since, we’ve sold $157,828,780 dollars of wine at auction. Our retail operation had a record year in 2012 and is on pace to set a new record in 2013. On the fi fth anniversary of the Fox Cellar auction, it seems appropriate to look back at how that auction unfolded. With the fi nancial crisis catching steam that spring, we were nervous and tried to convince the owner of the Fox Cellar to sell his wines in June instead of September. He couldn’t be swayed. On Monday, September 15th Lehman Brothers fi led for bankruptcy and the stock market dropped 4.4% during what was shaping up to be one of the worst fi nancial weeks of all time. That same week, we were charged with selling an estimated $6.8 million-10.2 million of wine at the most important auction in our history. It feels like it all happened yesterday. I was nauseated as I sat in my offi ce, staring at my Ben Nelson President email inbox and phone, while waiting for the dreaded words… “The markets are collapsing”… “I’m Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. sorry but I am just too nervous right now about the future”… “Pull my bids”. It felt like the world was unraveling, yet for the most part those calls never came. The sale went forward on Friday, September 19th and Saturday, September 20th, and the results were spectacular, surpassing the high auction estimate for a total of $11.2 million. When I called the consignor Saturday night to pass along the news he uncharacteristically let his guard down and laughed out loud. I could hear his smile through the phone. In retrospect it is easy to see how that auction was just too good to pass up. He had bought the best wines from the greatest vintages in massive quantities with the conviction that truly great cellars are based solely on provenance and condition. Even he was surprised at just how much money that foresight would make him, especially in the midst of a fi nancial meltdown. This auction kicks off on Friday September 20th, 2013, exactly fi ve years to the day since the fi nal hammer fell at the Fox Cellar sale in 2008. This sale includes wines from various collectors with the same high standards of that famous collection. To start, we have a collection of wine from a Midwestern collector (Lots 1-159) who acquired 2000 Bordeaux as futures, as well as some of the greatest Californian wines ever made, either on release or direct from the wineries. The second consignment comes from a Pacifi c Northwest connoisseur (Lots 160-235) who has a passion for the greatest Burgundy producers and bought his wines on release. Images of his original receipts are included in the catalog. The second day of the auction is graced by a massive collection of pristine Bordeaux and incredibly rare Rhône wines (Lots 1010-1196), all purchased as futures, from the cellar of a Southern gentleman. An East Coast collection of elite Bordeaux and pristine Burgundy (Lots 1197-1223) includes the rarest of the rare…Pétrus, Le Pin, DRC and Leroy. Lot 805, two bottles of 1959 Clos de la Roche, Cuvée William, from Domaine Ponsot, is truly special and a testament to the legacy of the Fox Cellar. Included in the catalog is an image of the purchase receipt from 1971 (the consignor paid $15/btl) and a photo of the deteriorated, torn, and damp stained label… a totally original and ultra-rare thing of beauty! Of course, The Fox Cellar will also be represented in this sale (Lots 935-1009) to commemorate the fi ve year anniversary of that fi rst incredible consignment.
