As was alluded to previously, the extent of inundation in areas of Khulna and Satkhira districts is severe Houses Damaged: 6,09,592 with long term livelihood challenges ahead particularly in the Crops Damaged: 3,18,140 acre shrimp industry where major losses have occurred and also in the agriculture sector where the longer term impact of saline intrusion in regard to land use will not be known for some time. Many boatloads of people have been observed leaving the water logged areas of Dacope in Khulna District and head towards Khulna and other townships. This may only be a temporary situation however the likelihood of more people transitioning out of the affected areas is considered high, particularly if inundation cannot be reversed. While the current effort remains on immediate relief and medical assistance the future focus must soon shift to addressing the mid to longer term habitat and livelihood challenges caused by the extensive inundation and imminent flood season. (417 Box) Baterhat district [Data Date: 04th June, 2009] Gonoshasthaya Kendra In response to Cyclone Aila, Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK) has deployed 2 Medical Teams with Veolia Water Treatment Unit to ensure 40,000 litre safe water at Shem Nagar of Shatkhira, the most Aila affected district. It took 3 days to find suitable place to install Veolia Water Treatment Unit. They are working with close collaboration with Upazilla Nirbahi Officer and Armed forces. GK also strengthen its ongoing programme located in cyclone SIDR activities by deploying 2 Medical Teams at Shoronkhola of Bagerhat district and two medical teams at Charfassion of Bhola Districts. One is working at Kukri Mukri and another one is at Char Monika and Laxi Char of Char Fassion. GK also sent another LMS Water Treatment Unit at Mongla with 2 more medical teams. They have reported to Upazilla Health Administrator. Every where GK is working in close coordination with Upazilla Nirbahi Officer and Health Administration.
