The any engraved portraits Wash i ngton which were published during his lifetim e bear upon their face the evidence o f their own a nd identity genuineness . Not so , however , the oil portraits which have as a rule no date or si g n ature ; their authen ticity rests partly upon their inherent quality but m ore particularly upon their history or pedigree . Most of the original por traits o f Washington were painted from one hun dred and t e n to one hundred and twenty -fiv e n m years ago , and , as in so lo g a period docu ent ary evidence of authenticity is in the case of most o f the contemporary portraits entirely lost or rests vii FOR E WOR D f f m n upon very eeble a ily traditio , it is desirable t o take every precaution to preserve j ealously the f n pedigrees o such portraits as are beyo d dispute . Letters or documen ts relating to such a precious m as m heirloo an authentic cont—e porary portrait o f Washington should be safe guarded in every m possible way . Such docu ents are always in n o f n or da ger bei g lost destroyed , but there is o ne m n n i s ethod , reproductio by printi g , which more sure and certai n than preservatio n even in f a sa e deposit vault .
