MOURA, FABIANA R. COSTA, LUIZ E. ANELLI & Academy Section: Paleontology IVAN NUNES Abstract: The frog clade Neobatrachia or “advanced frogs” represents more than 95% e20191560 of the diversity within Anura. The neobatrachian fossil record is incomplete due to the small size and fragile nature of their bones but provides some clues on the time and rate of the current diversifi cation of modern-day amphibians. The Crato Formation (Aptian) of 93 northeastern Brazil is known for the presence of, at least, fi ve species of neobatrachian (Suppl. 2) fossils. Herein, we describe a well-preserved fossil that represents a new neobatrachian 93(Suppl. 2) taxon from the Crato Formation (Cretaceous) in the Araripe Basin, northeastern Brazil, DOI and perform phylogenetic analysis to assess its higher-level relationships. The new 10.1590/0001-3765202120201560 specimen is an almost complete and articulated skeleton with soft tissue preservation. Phylogenetic analysis recovered the specimen nested in the clade Hyloidea and our results highlight the remarkable value of the Crato Formation as a Laggerstätte. Such incompleteness provides few clues on the time and rate of the current diversifi cation Among anurans, the clade Acosmanura Savage of modern-day amphibians (Roelants et al. 2007, 1973 comprises Anomocoela Nicholls 1916 (= Baéz et al. 2009), but highlights the importance Pelobatoidea of some authors; e.g. Chen et al. that new fossil findings can have in current 2016), whose members were formerly considered hypotheses about the origin and evolution of as part of the “middle frogs” (Mesobatrachia; the clade (Agnolin et al. 2020). This can be, at least partially, due to This unit is part of the Araripe Basin, a small the small size and fragile nature of their bones, intracratonic basin that comprises the states which hamper the potential of fossilization of Ceará, Pernambuco, and Piauí, and whose (Moura & Barreto 2006, Lynch 1973, Leite et al. tectonic evolution is linked to the opening of An Acad Bras Cienc (2021) 93(Suppl. 2) PEDRO HENRIQUE A.G. The most parsimonious Many fossils from the Crato Formation are at trees were found using the heuristic search some extent three-dimensionally preserved and method, with 1000 rounds of random addition almost complete, suggesting that deposition sequences retaining 10 trees per replicate, occurred under low-energy conditions (Báez et and then submitting them to a round of tree al. 2009). Furthermore, the batrachofauna shows bisection and reconnection (TBR) branch a high taxonomic diversity and yields some of swapping. The resulting trees saved in RAM were the earliest records of neobatrachians, with no then submitted to a second round of TBR.
