[Rev .I . Spacing conventions following periods are given below. These mnventions have been established b achieve the following: 1) Standardize the spacing conventions following periods in all parts of the catalq record. 2) Make the application of the conventions consistent, whether the catalog record being prepared is MARC or mn-MARC, for those prepar- irq catalog copy and for others who must process it , e .go, in printing final copy or in converting copy to machine-readable £om. Note, haw- wer , that in some instances spacing on printed products derived £ran MARC records is nrdified by output prograns, sn that the spacing in the machine record may not reflect what is actually output. 3) Provide a cunprehensive statement, applicable to access points as ~~11as to bibliographic description. Apply the following conventions in lieu of any other explicit or implicit instructions in the rules (e.g., l.lG2) regarding spacing after per ids: 1) Access points (including series statements traced the same but excluding those traced differently and those not traced). Leave tm spaces after a period serving to separate distinct units of access points, including those for uniform titles. [Rev .] Use judgment in deciding whether a mrd or phrase is part of the title proper or is an elanent of other title information. In many cases of course, the language used may itself anmr this question by offering no break at all between the elements: Loan agreement between the gwernnent of the thited Kingdm of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the gwernnent of the Argentine R?p&lic In other cases, however, the source may indeed show a break (usually with a ccamna), but what follows the break is an inseparable part of the sense of the title: Sincerely, Willis Wayde Such obvious cases aside, it will usually be the cataloger's judgment that must perceive the difference between such titles proper as Cataloging Service Bulletin, No. 14 / Fall 1981 5 The golden years of trains, 1830-1920 Greeley, life and times John McConnack, his own life story and such titles and other title infonnation as Social life in twentieth century America : our custcms and traditions The canplete car owner's manual : everyman1s guide to repair and maintenance Layout, typography, the appearance of the title in sources other than the chief one are all factors that may influence the cataloger's judg- ment. me factor that should frequently influence this jdgment in favor of including the word or phrase within the title proper is when the beginning of the title is very brief and is apt to be repeated with- in the catalog as the beginning of titles of many other items.
