The main source of the data was an annual survey of 145 Pennsylvania colleges and universities. Comparative national data are also provided. Tables and figures present the following data:(1) average annual increase in undergraduate in-state basic student charges vs. the consumer price index, 1986-87 through 1995-96;(2) average undergraduate in-state tuition and required fees by institutional category, 1986-87 through 1995-96;(3) average annual increase in undergraduate in-state tuition and required fees, 1986-87 through 1995-96;(4) average combined room and board charges by institutional category, 1986-87 through 1995-96;(5) average annual increase in room and board charges, 1986-87 through 1995-96;(6) average basic student charges by institutional category, 1995-96; and (7) average undergraduate basic student charges in 4-year institutions, United States, Pennsylvania, and selected neighboring states, 1994-95. Nonrespondent F-1 OVERVIEW This publication provides information about the cost of attending Pennsylvania colleges and universities.It lists tuition and required fees for undergraduate, graduate and first-professional programs, as well as room and board charges by institution.In addition, historical data by institutional category for the past 10 years is provided and compared with the average increase in the Consumer Price Index during the same period. National data by state, as well as a graphic presentation of these costs for selected neighboring states, compares how Pennsylvania ranked in relation to these states. The source of this data is an annual survey of 145 Pennsylvania colleges and universities. An estimate is provided for one nbnresponding institution.In addition, the data for branch campuses, where available, is also provided. National data was drawn from the results of a survey conducted by the U. S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The average annual increase in undergraduate in-state basic student charges (tuition, required fees, and room and board) for each institutional category was higher than the average increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the past 10 years. For example, during the period July 1985 through June 1995, the CPI rose an average of 3.6% annually (1982-84=100.0), whereas the average increase in basic student charges between 1986-87 and 1995-96 ranged between 4.1% for theological seminaries and 8.1% for private state-aided institutions. 3 8 ...state universities had the largest percentage increase in undergraduate in-state tuition and required fees since 1986-87...
