It is the result of the following field seasons during the austral summers of: 1968-69, 1970-71 and 1971-72. It is with great pleasure that I thank Dr. Richard P. Goldthwait, my adviser, for his advice and guidance over the past five years. Dr. Goldthwait has guided me in my graduate career, has made the effort of traveling half way around the world to visit me in the field and has supervised the writing of this dissertation. Calkin of the State University of New York at Buffalo for giving me first insight into Antarctic research and for making my first field season in Antarctica possible.
