Natural Dye and Rust Print: Block Print, Silkscreen, Katazome

NATURAL DYE AND RUST PRINT: BLOCK PRINT, SILKSCREEN, KATAZOME 2016 July 29-August 4 Courses aims to introduce the participant to the wonderful world of natural dyes; we will use the historical dyeing plants dried and wild plants collected in the territory; we'll see how the color will change with the variation of mordent, the pH of the bath, etc.. We will prepare natural dye inks for silkscreen prints and, after the design, we will prepare prototype frame where we will impress our design for print on textile. At the end we will experiment rust, wich is an old italian tradition, to new different effects with block print, silkscreen, katazome print. The first record of Romagna woodblock printing dates back to the end of the 18th century, when it started as a poor man's imitation of brocades, which country people couldn't afford. Fabrics printed in this way were used as household linen, to decorate cattle on fair days. Linen and hemp fabrics are used, and printing is done with pear-wood blocks. The characteristic rust color is obtained from soft iron suitably oxydised and then mixed with other ingredients. The pattern is impressed on the cloth by striking the woodblock smartly with a mallet. Once dried, the cloth is then soaked in a fixing bath. Catherine Brunel Chapuis will be our guest teacher. 1° day Natural dye lesson Print lesson Rust print lesson Nature trail in the woods to collect bark, plants and flowers for the dye and for design inspiration. 2° day Dye extraction from the collected plants.
