Back then, traditional venues were favoured, whereas now various competitions are moving to Asia and other places due to marketing directions; three decades ago, Pokljuka was also in luck that it was easier to win the right to host competitions. Pokljuka’s beginnings were humble. The race was held at an improvised snow stadium with an improvis ed press centre in a classroom at the nearby barracks; at that time, biathlon had a much more humble status than today, when it ranks among the top winter sports. This was followed by constant development and changes, the first World Cup in 2001, and the renovation of the Biathlon Centre a decade ago; new challenges are already in store. Next year, Rudno polje will once again be hosting the World Championships Biathlon, the biggest winter sporting event in Slovenia to date. As Pokljuka and the conditions at the Biathlon Centre were continuously improving, so were Slovenian competitors.
