Relevant identified uses of the substance or mixture and uses advised against Antioxidant. Saponins: are being promoted commercially as dietary supplements and food ingredients. However there are very limited US, EU, etc. agency-approved roles for saponins in human therapy. Therapeutic benefit is a result of careful administration of an appropriate dose. Very great care needs to be exercised in evaluating or acting on specific claims of therapeutic benefit from ingesting saponin-type and other natural products. are poisonous towards lower life forms. have been reported to provide a hypocholesteremic effect (caused by low levels of blood cholesterol) by inhibiting the passive diffusion of colic acid through the formation of micelles thus preventing absorption, anticancer, antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory properties are used widely for their effects on ammonia emissions in animal feeding. The mode of action seems to be an inhibition of the urease enzyme, which splits up excreted urea in faeces into ammonia and carbon dioxide. Animal trials have shown that a reduced ammonia level in farming operations causes less damages to the respiratory tract of animals, and may help to make Relevant identified uses them less vulnerable to diseases. have also been used as adjuvants in vaccines. In their use as adjuvants in the production of vaccines, toxicity associated with sterol complexation remains a major issue for attention. form complexes with cholesterol to form pores in cell membrane bilayers, e.g., in red cell (erythrocyte) membranes - complexation leads to red cell lysis (haemolysis) on intravenous injection. In addition, the amphipathic nature of the class gives them activity as surfactants that can be used to enhance penetration of macromolecules such as proteins through cell membranes. are amphipathic glycosides (having both a water and fat soluble ends) grouped phenomenologically by the soap-like foaming they produce when shaken in aqueous solutions. are bitter-tasting and foam strongly when shaken in water. They form oil-in-water emulsions and act as collective colloids. Saponins (sapinogen glycosides) and sapogenins are widely distributed in plants. Each saponin consists of an aglucone moiety (the sapogenin), a sugar and a glycoside. The sapinogenin may be a steroid or a triterpene (unsaturated hydrocarbons based on the isoprene unit H2CC(CH3)CH CH2) and with structures similar to that of steroid hormones), and the sugar may be glucose, Product code: P2004 Version No: 1.2.23.2 Page 1 of 25 S.REACH.GB.EN Lancaster Way Business Park Safety Data Sheet (Conforms to Regulation (EU) No 2020/878) Ely, Cambridgeshire, CB6 3NX, UK. If skin contact occurs: Immediately remove all contaminated clothing, including footwear. Skin Contact Flush skin and hair with running water (and soap if available). Seek medical attention in event of irritation. If fumes or combustion products are inhaled remove from contaminated area. Lay patient down. Keep warm and rested. Prostheses such as false teeth, which may block airway, should be removed, where possible, prior to initiating first aid Inhalation procedures. Apply artificial respiration if not breathing, preferably with a demand valve resuscitator, bag-valve mask device, or pocket mask as trained. Perform CPR if necessary. Transport to hospital, or doctor, without delay. IF SWALLOWED, REFER FOR MEDICAL ATTENTION, WHERE POSSIBLE, WITHOUT DELAY. For advice, contact a Poisons Information Centre or a doctor. Urgent hospital treatment is likely to be needed. In the mean time, qualified first-aid personnel should treat the patient following observation and employing supportive measures as indicated by the patient's condition. If the services of a medical officer or medical doctor are readily available, the patient should be placed in his/her care and a copy of the SDS should be provided.
