CENSUS OF INDIA 1991 SERIES-13 MADHYA PRADESH SUPPLEMENT TO PAPER·1 OF 1991 PROVISIONAL POPULATION TOTALS RURAL-URBAN DISTRIBUTION WORKERS AND THEIR DISTRIBUTION DILIPMEHRA DIRECfOR OF CENSUS OPERATIONS MADHYA PRADESH BHOPAL · Preface Soon after the count of the 1991 Census was over on 5th March, 1991, the Provisional Population Totals were released through Paper I of 1991, which gave a snapshot picture of the Population of Madhya Pradesh as at the Sunrise of 1st March, 1991. In Paper I, figures relating to total population with sex-wise break up, growth-rate, sex-ratio, density of population, and, absolute figures of literates with sex-wise break up, have been presented down to the district level. The present Paper, which is in continuation of Paper I of 1991 , is being brought out as Supplement to Paper I of 1991. It covers important characteristics relating broadly to urbanization, literacy, sex-ratio and work participation rates etc. for rural and urban areas, based on the provisional population figures, as revealed by the 1991 Census. The main tables provide data upto district and town level, while similar information upto the tahsil level for rural areas only, is also given in the three Appendices. It is for the first time in 1991 Census that an attempt has been made to make available to the data users, information on the aspect of distribution of population and literates by sex, total workers, main workers, marginal workers and their percentage to total population; distribution of main workers by broad categories of cultivators, agricultural labourers, workers in household industry and other wor~ers, down to the tahsil level on the basis of the provisional population totals. Normally the above-mentioned details, down to the tahsil level are only available after the final PCA is ready, which normally takes about a year and a half after the release of the provisional population figures. It would not be out of place to mention here that, the value of absolute data has been further enhanced, by depicting them on maps and charts. I nformation of such nature being presented for the first time, along with the provisional population figures, has been specifically indicated with an asterisk, followed by a footnote. Unlike other States, where the above mentioned information is being brought out in two separate volumes as Paper II and Paper III of 1991, Madhya Pradesh has decided to publish the information in one volume; as a Supplement to Paper 1. The voluminous records are currently under manual tabulation in ten Regional Tabulation Offices located at four Zonal Centres viz. Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur and Bilaspur. Unlike in the past Censuses, when the villagewise Primary Census Abstract was presented tahsilwise, the 1991 Census will be a land mark in providing information CD Blockwise, for the first time, at the behest of the Director of Census Operations, Madhya Pradesh. Apart from the Primary Census Abstract, a large number of tables are being generated through computor processing. These will be published in different volumes as indicated in the 'Publication Plan' appended to Chapter I of this Supplement to Paper I. lowe a deep sense of gratitude to Shri A.R.Nanda, Registrar General and Census Commis sioner of India without whose unstinted support and guidance, the task would have been, virtually, impossible to accomplish. In the preparation of this Paper, I am particularlythanktul to Shri L.S.UJ~B. Singh, former Director of Economics and Statistics, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh and, Shri M.L.Sharma, former Deputy Director Census Operations, Directorate of Census Operations, Madhya Pradesh who were unsparing in giving me the benefit of their time and experience.
