All vertebrate species codes are 4-letters and typically consist of the first few letters from a species “Common” name; some variations apply. Bird species codes follow those utilized by the American Ornithologists’ Union and Bird Studies Canada (Lepage 2005). All other vertebrate codes are similar to those used by Alberta Environment’s Biodiversity Species Observation Database. Red Squirrel (RESQ) appears in both the mammal and bird list because it is a species commonly documented during breeding bird surveys. All invertebrate species codes were developed by the author based on the format currently used for vascular and nonvascular plants. Invertebrate codes are 7-letters and consist of the first 4-letters of the Genus, and first 3- letters of the species Latin name; some variations apply. Variations typically occur when species have similar spellings for their species’ names and when subspecies occur. Generally, the next letter of a species name will be used in cases for similar spellings (eg., Anurida maritima = ANURMAR and Anurida martynovae = ANURMAT) and in the case of a subspecies, letters from both species and subspecies names may be used (eg., Trhypochthoniellus setosus canadensis = TRHYSEC). The list of mite (orbatida) species was originally gathered from Behan-Pelletier and Eamer (2004) and the springtail (collembola) list was originally compiled from a North American species list (Nearctica.com). Variations in codes are highlighted in blue so field staff can distinguish differences between species and ensure the proper code is utilized. Codes that are highlighted in blue, and in bold print, indicate similar conflicts but with a different taxon (i.e., moss or lichen species). All vertebrate and invertebrate species codes are listed alphabetically by ABMP code for ease of reference. Along with the ABMP species code, this document includes the internationally recognized “Nature Serve” codes given to all biodiversity, scientific names, and common names (when they exist). All vertebrate species found in this document are ranked according to the 2005 General Status of Alberta Wild Species (Alberta Sustainable Resource Development 2006). Each ranking is conveniently colour-coded for ease of viewing. At Risk Any species known to be “At Risk” after formal detailed status assessment and designation as “Endangered” or “Threatened” in Alberta. May Be At Risk Any species the “May Be At Risk” of extinction or extirpation, and is therefore a candidate for detailed status assessment. Sensitive Any species that is not at risk of extinction or extirpation but may require special attention or protection to prevent it from becoming at risk. Secure A species that is not “At Risk”, “May Be At Risk”, or “Sensitive”. Undetermined Any species for which insufficient information, knowledge or data is available to reliably evaluate its general status. Not Assessed Any species that has not been examined. Exotic/Alien Any species that has been introduced as a result of human activities. Extirpated/Extinct Any species no longer thought to be present in Alberta (extirpated) or no longer believed to be present anywhere in the world (extinct). Accidental/Vagrant Any species occurring infrequently and unpredictably in Alberta (i.e., outside its usual range). 2 Vertebrate and Invertebrate Species Codes Version 2.1 Vertebrate Species Amphibians ABMP Nature Serve Provincial Ranking Common Name Scientific Name Code AAABC05070 BCFR Secure Boreal Chorus Frog Pseudacris triseriata AAABB01080 CATO May Be At Risk Canadian Toad Bufo hemiophrys AAABH01290 SPFR Sensitive Columbia Spotted Frog Rana luteiventris AAABB01050 GPTO May Be At Risk Great Plains Toad Bufo cognatus AAAAA01080 LTSA Sensitive Long-toed Salamander Ambystoma macrodactylum AAABH01170 NLFR At Risk Northern Leopard Frog Rana pipiens AAABF02010 PLSP May Be At Risk Plains Spadefoot Toad Spea bombifrons AAAAA01140 TISA Secure Tiger Salamander Ambystoma tigrinum N/A UNTA N/A Unidentified Tadpole Rana, Bufo, Pseudacrisand Spea AAABB01030 WETO Sensitive Western Toad Bufo boreas AAABH01200 WOFR Secure Wood Frog Rana sylvatica Birds ABMP Provincial Nature Serve Common Name Scientific Name Code Ranking ABPAE33030 ALFL Secure Alder Flycatcher Empidonax alnorum ABNND02010 AMAV Secure American Avocet Recurvirostra americana ABNGA01020 AMBI Sensitive American Bittern Botaurus lentiginosus ABNJB10040 ABDU Secure American Black Duck Anas rubripes ABNME14020 AMCO Secure American Coot Fulica americana ABPAV10010 AMCR Secure American Crow Corvus brachyrhynchos ABPBH01010 AMDI Secure American Dipper Cinclus mexicanus ABNNB02030 AMGP Secure American Golden-Plover Pluvialis dominica ABPBY06110 AMGO Secure American Goldfinch Carduelis tristis ABNKD06020 AMKE Secure American Kestrel Falco sparverius ABPBM02050 AMPI Secure American Pipit Anthus rubescens ABPBX06010 AMRE Secure American Redstart Setophaga ruticilla ABPBJ20170 AMRO Secure American Robin Turdus migratorius ABPBX94010 ATSP Secure American Tree Sparrow Spizella arborea ABNFC01010 AWPE Sensitive American White Pelican Pelecanus erythrorhynchos ABNJB10180 AMWI Secure American Wigeon Anas americana ABNNN07030 ANMU Accidental/Vagrant Ancient Murrelet Synthliboramphus antiquus ABNUC47010 ANHU Accidental/Vagrant Anna's Hummingbird Calypte anna ABNBA01020 ARLO Secure Arctic Loon Gavia arctica ABNNM08080 ARTE Secure Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea ABNNF11120 BASA Secure Baird's Sandpiper Calidris bairdii ABPBXA0010 BAIS May Be At Risk Baird's Sparrow Ammodramus bairdii ABNKC10010 BAEA Sensitive Bald Eagle Haliaeetus leucocephalus ABPBXB9190 BAOR Sensitive Baltimore (Northern) Oriole Icterus galbula ABNPB01080 BTPI Accidental/Vagrant Band-tailed Pigeon Columba fasciata ABPAU08010 BANS Sensitive Bank Swallow Riparia riparia ABNSA01010 BNOW Accidental/Vagrant Barn Owl Tyto alba ABPAU09030 BARS Secure Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica ABNSB12020 BDOW Sensitive Barred Owl Strix varia ABNJB18020 BAGO Secure Barrow's Goldeneye Bucephala islandica ABPBX03220 BBWA Sensitive Bay-breasted Warbler Dendroica castanea ABNXD01020 BEKI Secure Belted Kingfisher Ceryle alcyon ABPBK06050 BETH Accidental/Vagrant Bendire's Thrasher Toxostoma bendirei ABPBX05010 BAWW Secure Black and White Warbler Mniotilta varia ABNNN05010 BLGU Accidental/Vagrant Black Guillemot Cepphus grylle ABNJB17010 BLSC Accidental/Vagrant Black Scoter Melanitta nigra 3 Vertebrate and Invertebrate Species Codes Version 2.1 ABNUA01010 BLSW Undetermined Black Swift Cypseloides niger ABNNM10020 BLTE Sensitive Black Tern Chlidonias niger ABNNF09020 BLTU Accidental/Vagrant
