Show and Tell at Cathedral High By David Fernandez PPAGLA Chairman of the Board We recently had a chance to have a “show and tell day” at Cathedral High School. Cathedral High School has a student body of more than 700 young men, most coming from low-income families living in the old- est neighborhoods of Los Angeles. One of our PPAGLA board members, Lou Varela, is a Cathedral alum, and he came to us with the idea of spending some time with Cathedral’s video/audio students. PPAGLA board member Art Quezada, MARCH/JUNE 2017 • a well-known chief videographer from KMEX-TV Los Angeles, volunteered his time and brought a live TV truck to the school for show and tell. The financial support again is an amazing gift which will allow me to continue traveling and exploring new story opportuni- ties that are not easily reached without funding. Without such funding I would never have been able to commit myself firmly to traveling to capture the photo story of the current changes in Cuba. The scholarship will allow me to plan and fund another trip this summer to find an- other story which will likely be in Mexico. The support through the Nikon Key Mission 360 camera is a great opportunity to explore new forms of storytelling and to stay relevant in this ever changing game of multimedia and to better capture a more complex layer within a story. Overall I am very thankful for all the support that the Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Mike Nelson Angeles has offered me which has pushed me to higher John McCoy, left, and Mark Terrell, right, present 2016 Lifetime Achievement honoree achievements in my career of photojournalism. Jose Lopez, Santa Monica College Dear Past Presidents and Retired Members Scholar- ship Fund, and Sara Wood: Words really can’t express how honored I am to have received The PPAGLA Student Press Photographer of the Year runner up award for 2016. It was also a surprise to have been awarded a schol- arship prize, which will go right back into paying for school, and my photography. Photography is an outlet, and passion that keeps me grounded in this crazy world. I have worked really hard this past year and a half in college to prove to myself, and to Santa Monica College that photography, and photojournalism is a very serious part of my life.
