2018-2019 Academic Catalog

2018-2019 Academic Catalog The electronic Academic Catalog will be the official version for Coker College MISSION OF THE COLLEGE Coker College is a student-centered, comprehensive college. It is dedicated to providing every student enrolled in the Day Program and in the Adult Degree Program an academic curriculum based upon a uniformly excellent liberal arts core that enhances the structured development of key personal skills. The College’s goal is to graduate students with the ability to think analytically and creatively, and to write and speak effectively. Experiences both in and out of the classroom are focused on active student involvement and the practical application of academic knowledge that lead to lifelong learning. Coker measures its success by the personal and professional accomplishments enjoyed by all members of the academic community. The Coker College Mission Statement was most recently reviewed and revised by removing the phrase “baccalaureate degree granting” from the first sentence. The change in wording was first presented by the President to the faculty at a senate meeting on September 10, 2009. At the October 29, 2009 meeting of the Board of Trustees, the Chair of the Faculty and Educational Policy Committee of the Board presented a motion to change the mission statement and the entire Board unanimously approved it. [Board of Trustees Minutes 10-29-09] The College’s Mission Statement as revised in Fall 2009 is specific and appropriate to Coker College as the College moves forward with its Strategic Plan. 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS MISSION OF THE COLLEGE 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS 2 NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY 6 2018-2019 ACADEMIC CALENDARS 7 Undergraduate Day Program 7 Undergraduate Adult Degree and Online Programs 9 Graduate Program 11 INTRODUCING COKER COLLEGE 13 Accreditation and Memberships 15 UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS 16 Day Program for Undergraduate Students 16 Adult Degree Program for Undergraduate Students 18 Honors Program for Undergraduate Students 19 UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS 20 Freshman Admission 20 Transfer Admission 21 Transfer Agreements 22 International Student Admission 22 Admission of Undocumented Students 24 Non-Degree Seeking Students 24 Readmission 25 Deposits 25 TUITION & FEES 2018 – 2019 25 Undergraduate Day Program Costs 25 Adult Degree Program Costs 27 Tuition and Fee Policies 27 FINANCIAL AID 29 Financial Assistance Programs 29 STUDENT SUCCESS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND OTHER SERVICES 35 Office of Student Success 35 Other Organizations and Services 39 ACADEMIC POLICIES 43 Academic Good Standing, Probation or Suspension 43 Academic Honors for Undergraduate Students 44 General Policies and Procedures 45 Academic Support Services 50 UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS 51 2 General Education Requirements 53 Academic Major Requirements 58 UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS 60 African American Studies 61 Art 61 Biology 64 Business 67 Business Management 76 Chemistry 78 Communication 80 Computer Science 81 Criminology 82 Dance 83 Education 87 English 90 Environmental Studies Minor 93 Foreign Languages 94 Chinese 95 French 96 Spanish 96 Forensic Studies Specialization 97 History 98 Honors Program 99 Interdisciplinary Studies 101 International Studies Minor 101 Latin American Studies Minor 102 Mathematics 102 Medical Technology 104 Music 104 Physical Education and Sport Studies 109 Political Science 113 Pre-Law Specialization 113 Psychology 115 Sociology 117 Theatre 118 MASTERS PROGRAMS 122 Academic Expectations 123 Admissions Policies 124 Academic Policies 125 Criminal and Social Justice Policy 127 College Athletic Administration 128 Professor John Jewell 128 Master of Education in Curriculum and Instructional Technology 129 3 Master of Education in Literacy Studies 129 Management and Leadership 130 Course Descriptions 130 African-American Studies (AAS) 131 Art (ART) 132 Biology (BIO) 136 Business – Administration (BA) 140 Business – Management (BM) 147 Coker College (CC, CW, CAP) 148 Chemistry (CHE) 149 Chinese (CHI) 151 College Athletic Administration (MCAA) 153 Communication (COM) 154 Computer Science (CS) 158 Criminology (CRIM) 159 Dance (DNC) 163 Education (EDU) 167 Education - Curriculum and Instructional Technology (EDCIT) 171 Education – Gifted and Talented (EDGT) 172 Education – Literacy Studies (EDLS) 173 Engineering (EGR) 174 English (ENG) 175 Environmental Studies (ES) 180 French (FRE) 181 Geology (GEO) 181 Geography (GPY) 182 History (HIS) 182 Honors (HON) 186 Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) 186 International Studies (INS) 187 Library (LIB) 187 Mathematics (MAT) 187 Management and Leadership (MGTL) 190 Music (MUS) 191 Physical Education and Sport Studies (PE) 196 Philosophy (PHI) 200 Physics (PHY) 201 Pre-Law Studies (PLS) 202 Political Science (POL) 202 Psychology (PSY) 204 Religion (REL) 207 Sociology (SOC) 207 Spanish (SPA) 211 Theatre (THE) 214 4 BOARD OF TRUSTEES 219 ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOARD 220 FACULTY & STAFF EMERITI 221 Faculty Emeriti 221 Staff Emeriti 222 ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS & STAFF 224 Office of the President 224 Office of Academic Affairs 224 Office of Advancement, Alumni Engagement, and College Communications 226 Office of Athletics and Athletic Facilities 227 Office of Chief Financial Officer 229 Office of Enrollment Management 230 Office of Student Affairs and Contract Services 231 Faculty 232 5 NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY Coker College, in compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, including Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, marital status, veteran or military status, or against individuals with disabilities, or other legally protected classifications in the areas of employment, admission, financial aid or access to educational or extracurricular programs, activities, or facilities. 6 2018-2019 ACADEMIC CALENDARS (Dates subject to change) Undergraduate Day Program Fall Semester, 2018 Aug 20 Returner Move-in & finalize schedule Aug 21 Fall classes begin Aug 28 Last day to Drop/Add a course Aug 29 Census date for reporting Aug 29 Roster verification begins Sep 3 Labor Day;
