LINER NOTES (English): IMARHAN TIMBUKTU w​ as formed in 1993 by M​ ohamed Issa Ag Oumar El Ansari,​ known as ​M’ed Issa.​ Since 1995, the group has toured throughout the North and South of Mali. They have appeared annually on the stage of the Festival au Desert and have performed in Europe and the North America. The group’s name "I​marhan"​ means "​those who love" ​i​n Tamashek, the Tuareg language. By adding “Timbuktu”, they demonstrate their strong pride in their legendary home town. The core members of IMARHAN TIMBUKTU ​are M​ ohamed Issa,​ his brother, guitarist O​ usmane Ag Oumar El Ansari,​ and their two sisters, percussionists and backup vocalists ​Fadimata Walet Oumar ​[known to all as “D​ isco”​] and Z​eina Walet.​ The album title, "​Akal Warled" (​Fo​reign Country)​,​ speaks about exile ​a​nd the hardships endured by the Tuareg refugees currently living in the camps of Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Niger and Algeria. These refugees want to return to live in peace in their northern Mali homeland. The five diamond design found on the cover of the disc is symbolic of Tuareg women. It is known as the K​houmeïssa. Often found in silver jewelry, it is used as an ornament and also as a good luck charm. His musical beginnings reveal the deeply sentimental and romantic nature of his creative process. Indeed, M​ ’ed Issa ​began to scratch the guitar because he was passionately in love with a woman. But his dilemma was that she was married. His guitar then became his consolation, a way to ease the pain and tame the wait. Thus, he played all the time thinking constantly of the day when his beloved would be free. Although in time his heart was liberated, this story permanently marks his artistic identity as well as the creative force of M​ ’ed Issa’​s lyrics. Today, M​ ohamed Issa ​is a reference point in contemporary Tuareg Music. His songs speak of love, unity, the desert and its cultures and traditions. LINER NOTES (French): Imarhan – Tombouctou s​’est construit autour de M​ ohamed Issa Ag Oumar El Ansari. ​Le groupe existe spontanément depuis 1993, mais il commence à se produire et à tourner en 1995 au nord et au sud du Mali. Il fait deux concerts en Espagne, il s’est produit sur la scène du festival au désert, il revient, en 2014 pour une deuxième tournée aux États-Unis. « I​marhan,​ » signifie «​ ceux qui s’aiment » ​en Tamasheq, la langue des Touaregs. En ajoutant « T​ombouctou » ​à ce nom, les membres du groupe veulent donner un signe d’unité faisant référence à la ville mythique, dont ils sont originaires. Imarhan – Tombouctou ​est constitué d’un compositeur-guitariste-chanteur, d’un bassiste, d’un accompagnateur, de choristes et de percussionnistes. Le titre de ce premier album : «​ Akal Warled » (P​ays étranger)​ ​évoque la question de l’exil ​e​t les épreuves endurées par les Touaregs réfugiés en Mauritanie, au Burkina Faso, au Niger et en Algérie. Ces exilés voudraient revenir et vivre, en paix, sur leur terre natale au Nord-Mali. La K​houmeïssa ​: C​inq losanges ​f​ormant un triangle,​ qu’on retrouve sur la couverture du disque, est un symbole de la femme Touarègue. K​houmeïssa,​ est parfois façonnée en argent comme Bijou, les femmes l’utilisent comme parure mais aussi en tant que protection contre le mauvais œil. En choisissant cet emblème typiquement féminin Imarhan-Tombouctou ​marque la substance de ses identités artistiques, tout en rendant un hommage à la Femme. Mohamed Issa Ag Oumar El Ansari, le leader du groupe Medissa,​ de son nom de scène, a commencé à jouer de «​ la guitare touarègue » ​dès l’expansion de ce courant musical, au début des années 90. Le point de départ de cet artiste révèle la nature profondément sentimentale et romantique de sa démarche poétique. En effet, Mohamed Issa a entrepris « à gratter la guitare » car il était passionnément amoureux d’une femme. Mais le sacré dilemme est que celle-ci était mariée. Alors, la guitare est devenue pour l’artiste une consolation, un moyen d’apaiser la douleur et d’apprivoiser l’attente. Ainsi, il jouait tout le temps, en pensant sans cesse au jour où sa bien-aimée sera libre pour lui.​ C​ette histoire marquera définitivement l’identité artistique, ainsi que les textes de Medissa. Et, bien ​p​lus tard, la libération du cœur surviendra, faisant alors, retrouver à l’artiste toute sa force créatrice. Ainsi, Mohamed Issa introduit chez T​artit, -​ c​élèbre groupe de Tombouctou, qu’il intègre à la fin des années 90 -, ​une note moderne avec la guitare acoustique et électrique. Avant d’être libre dans son art, le leader d’I​marhan - Tombouctou,​ s’est heurté au conservatisme familial. En effet, la coutume des siens proscrit pour la noblesse aristocratique l’utilisation de certains instruments à cordes. Ceux-ci étaient réservés aux griots, tandis que les nobles pouvaient s’adonner à la poésie et au chant pour les hommes, au tambourin (T​endé ​- T​achidialt)​ et au violon (E​mzad)​ pour les femmes. «​ Un jour, j’ai posé mes guitares dehors, devant la maison, alors que la pluie menaçait de tomber, j’avais fait cela pour voir la réaction de mon père ». À​ la grande surprise du musicien, son père l’interpella ainsi :​ « ne laisse pas tes instruments dehors, la pluie les gâtera ». ​Ce fut «​ le dernier obstacle » ​d’après Mohamed Issa, car si son père se souciait des instruments, « c​’est qu’il tolérait certainement que son fils fasse de la musique ».​ Malgré les obstacles, Medissa est devenu une référence dans la musique contemporaine Touarègue. Ses chansons parlent surtout d’amour, d’unité, du désert et de ses cultures. L’engagement de l’artiste est aussi de sensibiliser sur les thèmes du développement, de l’éducation et contre la perte des valeurs ancestrales importantes pour chaque société qui veut garder ses bases solides, tout en acceptant et en intégrant le monde actuel, sans perdre les repères.
