RURAL ECONOMY AND CONNECTIVITY COMMITTEE INQUIRY INTO CONSTRUCTION AND PROCUREMENT OF FERRY VESSELS IN SCOTLAND SUBMISISON FROM ANONYMOUS To Whom it Concerns, I would like to raise the matter regarding one of Calmac Ferries, MV Loch Seaforth, which operates between Stornoway & Ullapool. I believe that this ferry is not fit for the waters of the North Minch because the stern gunnel is very close to the water when the sea becomes rough. I personally had an experience which was frightening whilst travelling on the MV Sullivan. The ship was knocked over onto its side by a wave 40/50 foot high, this wave occurs in the North Atlantic every so often which has an effect in the Minch. In my view, if this was to happen with MV Loch Seaforth she would be swept? stern down into the waters, likely resulting in the ship sinking causing loss of lives. In my view, the design of the ship is poorly laid out. Also in my view: 1) Passengers are unable to get outside at the front of the ship on both port & starboard sides for fresh air/ viewing etc.. 2) To have the dog area next to the main restaurant is unpleasant & unhygienic, I’ve actually left my meal through no choice due to pet hair lying/ floating around the area. 3) It can be quite annoying to hear dogs barking while trying to enjoy a meal or watch TV. 4) The two unfinished projects in the Ferguson Yard Glasgow are unfit for purpose. 5) The design of ships should be similar to Norwegian Design and not an open stern for the North Minch Crossing. I personally have travelled this route many times and have had many different experiences on this crossing. My thanks go out to Captain John Angus & Captain Alex Morrison who always got us home safe. My family and I, like many others, are too familiar with the waters we cross, have awareness in of the dangers at sea and strongly feel MV Loch Seaforth is most unsuitable for the Stornoway-Ullapool crossing. 1 Many people are wondering what is the final cost for MV Loch Seaforth and the two ferries in the Ferguson Yard. What is actually going on and who is making all these decisions? 2 .
