Here in the place of that Hijli Detention Camp stands this fine monument of India (IIT) today representing Indias urges, Indias future in the making. 21.4.1956 Jawaharlal Nehru ALUMNI ANNUAL REPORT 2011-12 Dear Alumnus, Greetings to you from IIT Kharagpur! It is a great privilege for me to communicate with you as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Kharagpur. I take this opportunity to congratulate the alumni for being a part of this great institution and "the mother of all IIT". IIT Kharagpur was envisioned to lead India in technology education and research on the lines of the world's best technology institutes. Today there is a need to renew our focus on research and innovation. As part of the Vision 2020 exercise, we envision IIT Kharagpur to be a global top 20 technology institution in the next 20 years. This would be possible only if we sharpen our focus on research and innovation and a strong enabling environment with world- class infrastructure to attract an international pool of faculty and students. I also see a very strong need to drive interdisciplinary collaboration with a focus on addressing the national and local challenges. Integration of Medical and Engineering Education & Research has benefitted both Medical and Engineering practice and profession and I do hope that the proposed Dr. B C Roy Institute of Medical Science & Research at IIT Kharagpur which has been approved by Government of India will be an important step forward in this direction. This is long overdue in India and is important to the strategic roadmap of IIT Kharagpur to lead this first-of-its-kind collaboration in India. I do envisage alumni playing a proactive role in successful implementation of the Vision 2020 exercise including facilitating "industry and academia linkages" both locally and globally, "mentoring students & faculty", "participating actively in the development of the Institute" to name a few. The Institutional Development program is another key step in this direction and I hope you will actively participate and contribute towards developing sustainable fund raising program, building the IIT Kharagpur brand etc. IIT Kharagpur has given the world some of the finest academicians, scientists, researchers, technocrats and entrepreneurs. Let us all join hands and catapult this great institution to a truly global research-focused innovation-led technology institution. Dr. Shiv Nadar Chairman, Board of Governors IIT Kharagpur 05 Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur ALUMNI ANNUAL REPORT 2011-12 Dear Alumnus, It is time for our Annual Convocation and Foundation Day celebrations. Acharya Director IIT Kharagpur 06 www.iitkgp.org ALUMNI ANNUAL REPORT 2011-12 Dear Alumnus, What a pleasure to write to you in this 2nd edition of the Alumni Annual Report with the pilot edition being appreciated widely. With our reputation steadily strengthening across the globe this has been a year of growth and restructuring. We have taken several new initiatives like Bhaumik International Center for Advanced Research, upgrading of the School of Water Resources, and taking the P. K. Sinha Center for Bio Energy to greater heights. On the financial front we can count Arjun Malhotras donation of 1 million USD towards completion of his Golden Jubilee pledge, Vinod Guptas pledge to contribute for the International Center for Visiting Faculty, and gifting of a Chair position to the Architecture Department by Ranbir and Chitra Gupta. Quite a lot to say, and quite more to be done. I take this opportunity to explain you a bit more about the Founding Endowment concept. KGP is building its endowment and our initial target is Rupees 100 Crores. We know that it cannot be met by one person alone. So we would like to distribute the target to 100 Founding Endowers, each donating or raising a Crore each on an average. To make it even simpler, each Founding Endower can be a group, like your batch. Each batch contributing Rupees 50 Lakhs or more will be recognized as a Founding Endowment Batch. The individual donors will also be recognized. Already 1962 batch has made a pledge and taken the lead to become the first Founding Endowment Batch. 1981, 1984 and 1991 are already in the game and many others are following suit. The race is on. The 2012 batch is also not far behind. Many students from this passing out batch have contributed their caution money while another 400+ students have pledged percentage of their CTC in the coming year. With the senoirs and the junior most alumni we encourage every batch to choose their leaders and render towards this novel initiative. We have taken this approach following major universities across the world to increase our sustainable fundraising and enhance world ranking. If your batch has not yet started, please get your batch mates contribute towards this endowment fund which is going to commemorate your batch for years to come. You can take the initiative. We, the ID team, at the Office of Alumni affairs & International Relations are here to help you at every step and help you stay connected with your Alma Mater. Please register at the alumni web portal and avail the e-newsletter KGP Connection along with the multifarious benefits of the portal. We look forward to a strong support from you. If you have any ideas on how we can engage with you, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] Let us Innovate (I), Involve (I) and Transform (T) - KGP. Together we can.
